I’m at work, where my brother-in-law also works. It gets to be around 7:45 and no sonner than I comment to another worker that Jim’s running late, than I get a phone call from my mom, saying Jim and my sister are at the hospital, her water broke at 3am. This is meaningful to me for a number of reasons. 1. I’m gonna be an uncle 2. My sister will finally stop treating her cats like people (hopefully) 3. I won the baby pool, I picked today! Now if I only guessed the weight correctly . . . More updates as the situation progresses. ---

Wow, you won the baby pool! I have yet to see the money from the baby pools involved with our children. If you do one thing right in your life that will endear you to your sister, bring her flowers and/or chocolate while in the hospital. And, to score big points, do a sign ( bought or handmade) that says, " It’s a Boy/Girl/hermaphadite" and hang it on their house. Not having that done for either children was possibly the biggest disappointments for me. Maybe save the newspaper of the day the little one was born. I always meant to do that with our kids, but it’s on list next to " work out and drink more water." One last thing. Before you pick up the tyke, wash your dirty germ infested hands. ( by your second or third kid, you don’t care as much, but with the first kid, everyone looks like a walking disease waiting to infect the Precious Child.) Here are some cliches to practice on before you see your sister’s child: “s/he’s so little.” “s/He looks like…” ( Insert the relative that most annoys your sister) " What little fingers." “What long fingers…s/he’s going to be a piano player.” " How come s/he’s bowlegged?" “Do they always look like _this_” “How precious.” “Hey this doesn’t look like a cat.” Things you must say to your neice/nephew: “Hi, WWF is fake. And the third word to end in “gry” is…” To your sister you jump start her post partum depression by saying things like, " Gee, I thought you’d be skinnier after having the baby." (yeah, I got this, why do you ask?) To your brother in law you must say, " Condolences on the loss of your sex life." Congrats, Bratman! You look great for having your first neice/nephew! ---

Thanks for the tips, Shirley, I would’ve never thought of saving a paper (I bought one this morning, I’ll just hang on to it for her) and decorating the house never crossed my mind. I’ll be sure to do thast and let you know how she liked it. BTW - it’s a girl, they’ve known that for some time now. Her name is going to be Amanda Elizabeth. ---

OK, it’s about 4pm here. My sister’s water broke at 3am and she still hasn’t squeezed that puppy out. I’ll be back tomorrow morning with the update if anyone gives a shit or not. ---

My neice, Amanda Elizabeth was born last night around 7:30. She weighs 9lb 3oz. Mother and daughter are doing well. ---

But there’s a difference in being good to your pet and treating it like another person in the house. I lived with my sister when I first got out of the AF, cuz she’s a nurse and I was still recovering from a nasty car wreck and I just couldn’t believe the way she talked to her cats and treated them like people. She used to call from work and leave them messages on the answering machine just so they could her her voice while she was gone! Thank God she’s gotten married and knocked up since then. Maybe she’ll stop acting so much like one of those crazy cat ladies. ---

Congratulations on the niece! I have 4 nieces and 2 nephews and they are my pride and joy. I love being an aunt. You get to spoil the kid and give her back to your sister. It is so much fun! I hope you enjoy being an uncle as much I enjoy being an aunt! ---

I am sure you will get the chance to have time with your niece, eventually. My mom was so excited at being a grandma, I didn’t get to hold my nephew for 2 days! When my sister wasn’t feeding him, my mom was holding him. I finally made my sister send my mom to the store so I could hold my nephew. I am sure you will be able to turn your niece into a tomboy, or you could suggest to your sister to have another child so you can have a nephew. Well, maybe not, but it was a thought.
