You didn’t say “death of reason” - your picture had “America” on the tombstone, not reason. I guess you’re a liar, as well as a hypocrite.

Cue the special exception that exempts you from hypocrisy, but somehow can’t apply to liberals.

This isn’t a movie, and such a position doesn’t win you anything, other than prolonged and detracted wars where one side continues to commit atrocities and the other stand idly by twiddling their thumbs while the other side commits those atrocities.

But we’re not just doing it to prove a point. We’re doing it because it has a significant affect in the way we achieve our objectives. We’re _also_ doing it because we’re not inhuman monsters, but YMMV obviously.

> [@](#):
>
> Strawman alert!
>
> I never once advocated for murder of anyone. You guys sure love making things up. My position is simple: if we’re content to fight these wars against terrorist groups who commit all sorts of human rights abuses (or if these groups are content to fight us), then we should fight to win. We shouldn’t be beholden to doctrines that, quite frankly, don’t apply for terrorists, terrorist groups, terrorists organizations or their families.
>
> Yeah, I know. That’s not a sexy concept for those on the left, but it’s true.

I like how you accuse me of building a strawman and then go and build a bigger one. This idea that the left somehow think that all we have to do is hold hands with terrorists and sing Kumbaya and everything will be fine is one the right like to masturbate furiously to but I assure you it isn’t true. We simply understand that the War on Terror cannot be won by just killing everyone we label a terrorist, because (counterintuitively) that way just creates more terrorists. It is far more about propaganda and perception, which on a basic level requires us not to be war criminals.

Which I realize isn’t a sexy concept for those on the right, but it’s true.

But perhaps you’d like to stop waffling. You “never once advocated for murder of anyone”, but feel we should “fight to win” and that apparently includes all sorts of “human rights abuses”. What _do_ you mean then? What are these techniques prohibited by the Geneva Convention that you feel we should apply to the families of terrorists?

> [@](#):

You call it “virtue signalling”. I call it “having principles”. I recommend it.

> [@](#):
>
> I’m note interested in achieving peace and ending these wars in the Middle East. I happen to like my position much more than I like yours.

Except that your position works against achieving peace and ending these wars in the Middle East. GWB’s anti-Muslim terrorist rhetoric and advocacy of torture was a recruitment goldmine for Al Qaeda. It gave Bin Laden concrete evidence that America was the enemy of Islam, that it was “kill or be killed”, and that all of Al Qaeda’s efforts were fully justified. The approach you advocate is a blueprint for radicalizing our enemies and prolonging the wars.

So I’ll stick with my position, thanks.

Well then - let’s just kill everybody and have done with it. Because there will always be another relative or another friend of the person we just killed who might be a threat. This is the end result of your approach. Own it, bubble boy.

Yes, there is a lot of butthurt over the Trump victory. Most of the butthurt is coming from people who would be just as fucking butthurt if any of the other Republican candidates won.

There is at least one supreme court nomination that the incoming president will nominate (and Obama should have nominated that one) and there are 2 or 3 others that are old enough that they could die any day and they are all liberals. So we could see a significant shift to the right in the court. This could spell the severe truncation of abortion rights and the end of affirmative action. That’s a big deal to some people. But this is not Trump specific stuff, that’s just bellyaching that a Republican won.

The Trump specific stuff is that he is grossly under-qualified to be president of the United States. Almost dangerously so.

Its not that he is unqualified for any purpose. He is a good salesman and developer but he is dangerously ignorant of things that a POTUS should not be ignorant of. I suppose he can learn but there will be a ramp up period that would not have existed with any of the other candidates.

I think the overwrought bellyaching about the legitimacy of the election (based on Russian hacks of emails that exposed the duplicity of Hillary Clinton, the bias of the Democratic National Committee and the complicity of the “Ready for Hillary” crowd in the media in pushing for a Hillary nomination) is nucking futz. Trump as Manchurian candidate is the modern day equivalent of Birtherism. Its an embarrassment to the left.

The Trump specific stuff is stuff that everyone Democrat and Republican alike should be worried about. The Republicans might get a consolation prize in the form of SCOTUS nominations (and even that is only a likelihood, he might nominate his sister for all we know) but the notion that Trump will be predictable or consistent on policies that Republicans care about is a fool’s dream. They couldn’t control him during the primary and they won’t be able to control him during his term. Who knows WTF he will do and that unpredictability should worry you as much as it does me (and the rest of the world).

Y’know, I’m an upper middle class guy with a good life and plenty of savings. If things go to shit under Trump, my family and I will probably be OK, and we’ll certainly be in better shape than most.

Not everyone is in nearly such a good position as I am. Being concerned about what happens to others is a definition of ‘butthurt’ that I haven’t previously encountered.

You really think he’s going to pull out his veto pen when Ryan and Mitch get legislation through Congress? Because unless he does, _he’s_ the one who has no control over _them._ They’ll pass what they want to pass, he’ll fulfill his role as the Grover Norquist platonic ideal of a President, and it’ll become law.

It’s peculiar to see self-styled realists downplay the role of propaganda in modern war. A lot of the logic in this thread could be applied to the Germans in WWI, who were bewildered by how the international press were portraying them as barbarians for visiting collective punishment against the Belgians. What, they’re supposed to just stand around and get shot by partisans? Or let them get away with blowing up train tracks and tunnels?

Especially given grandmothers can support jihad and be overjoyed that her grandson is a martyr and guilt trip her other ones into joining the cause.

I would have been _displeased_ if another Republican had won, but “butthurt” seems to be a different level of displeasure. OK, maybe that would have been applicable if it had been Cruz. I’m a lifelong Dem but voted, only for the second time ever, in the Republican primary precisely because I saw in trump that big a threat. So, yeah, my level of disappointment is pretty high. And when you add on top of that the fact that this was the second time in recent memory (as these things go) that the popular vote and the Electoral vote parted company, that adds an additional level of bitterness to the whole thing.

(BTW, the prior time I voted in the Republican primary was 2000. The Democratic nomination was pretty much decided by then, so I cast a ballot for the Republican candidate I found most preferable and that was Senator McCain.)

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Republicans and other Trump voters are utterly unfamiliar with the concept of “giving a shit about someone else.” They simply can’t fathom why anyone would care about anyone else’s wellbeing.

Trumps speaks like a random word generator with a limited vocabulary. The highest assessment of his speaking level that I’ve seen was 8th grade and that seems a stretch. Most pegged him at 4th. Seems about right for **Clothahump**. Sad!!!

It depends.

If the Republicans decide to pass the transpacific partnership or something, I expect Trump will pull out his veto pen.

He is the titular head of the Republican party, he doesn’t seem to have any qualms whatsoever about eating his own. If Trumps gets it into his fucking head that he wants to build the Trump lunar space station and the Trump interplanetary mars colony and Ryan bucks him I think he will start calling Ryan a faggot.

In fact I would be fucking relieved if he became a non-issue and it all came down to Ryan and Mitch. Its not that Trump doesn’t play by the rules or doesn’t think the rules don’t apply to him, he has no fucking clue what the rules are. Its he’s playing Diplomacy and he practicing rolling dice.
