# I'm hatching salamander eggs!

I have no idea which species this is. We have salamanders and newts here. I was doing yard work and got rid of the small, plastic pool that I originally got for my dog for hot days but she hates it. It had a small bit of water in the bottom along with some mulm and detritus and before I dumped it I had a look in and saw 6 eggs. I scooped them up with a spoon and put them in a dish. This was about a week ago. I’ve been checking on them every day and I assume that’s their little, pale bodies inside. They’ve definitely grown. It got quite cool last night so I’ve brought them into the garage. I assume this late in the season they would not hatch naturally or, at the very least, die quickly after hatching due to the cold.

My mother kept one as a pet in a terrarium ages ago. Just don’t go licking them and wash your hands afterwards if you ever have to handle them. Highly toxic 🙂. Well, unless you are a [garter snake](https://news.vt.edu/articles/2016/06/fralin-garter.html) of course

They are still alive and appear to be progressing. It’s a bit hard to tell but the eggs are clear and not moldly and apparently that’s how you know if they’re viable. According to that article it can take 2-3 weeks for them to hatch. There are six eggs. John Cleese, Newt Scamander, Sir Isaac Newton, Minute, Newtonian and Xenomorph. A group of Newts is called an armada. Honestly I’ll be shocked if they actually hatch and even more shocked if even one survives.

I have a few ideas on raising/feeding. When I look at the mulm/detritus with a magnifying glass I can see tons of little creatures - worms, copepods and other squiggly things. For the first while I’ll have two containers and put in pond water with the detritus and move them over to a new one daily. Rinse and repeat. I also have African dwarf frogs and hand feed them daily so I would also try that. I’ve hatched live brine shrimp in the past so I might try that again as well.
Should any of them survive I’ll set up a terrarium next to the frog tank. Maybe get a couple of guppies so I have a supply of tiny, live food.

Well I don’t know what’s going on! Apparently if an egg turns white, it’s dead and you should remove it. One turned white but I just left it and now it’s got something small and dark moving around inside it so I don’t know.

If it is possible, I’d separate it out to a different container just to be on the safe side.
