After the Democratic debate the other night, all the candidates’ TV spots were aired. Each of them included the phrase “I’m Xxxx Xxxxx and I approved this message.”

I am so thankful they told me so, because up until then I was sure they were all invented and filmed by a guy named Jehosaphat McGurkle, who works at the Hostess cream cake factory in Iowa city and collects corn in his spare time.

Thank you, John Kerry and Joe Lieberman, for ensuring that I am no longer in the dark about who approved this message.

P.S. Seriously… Why?

Probably to separate the approved message from a pro-candidate message broadcast by a third party. I mean, if some wacko organization like PETA were supporting me as a candidate, I’d certainly want to make it clear that they are _not_ speaking on my behalf.

I thought it had something to do with McCain-Feingold Act of limiting soft money contributions.

Which is (unless I’m mistaken and please correct me if I’m wrong), PETA running an add how Howard Duck really cares for the poor defenseless animals, while Evil Penile of Death Johnson squishes goldfish with his head.
