> Here’s a very small list of movies that I actually found scary and aren’t bloodbaths:
> **In The Mouth Of Madness**
> **Phantoms
> Boogeyman
> The House On Haunted Hill** (remake, the orginial isn’t scary, but interesting)
> **Rose Red** (right up until it completely falls apart the last half hour)
> FYI **Burnt Offerings** is currently on Showtime. I watched the first half yesterday before shutting it off.

On the subject of remakes, I’ll suggest _Thirteen Ghosts_. I haven’t seen the original but the remake is plenty scary. There’s one oogy bit where the lawyer gets cut in half by a glass wall but that’s it. Every fan of Tony Shalhoub should see this once.

> Uh…Event Horizon was super duper gory. Realistic type gore that was very well done if you like that stuff. Dismembered corpses. Limbs all over the place. One scene involving a discompessed airlock which was uber-gory and about 200 gallons of blood.
>
> There apparently was a deleted scene involving an orgy in Hell, involving uh…instruments of torture.

I musta blocked out more of that movie than I thought. All I remember is Creepy Sam Neill.

Nice and clean but at the time I loved _Watcher in the Woods_ its disney no nothing messy or even real scary but lots of atmosphere and little surprises.

Definitely the 1963 version of The Haunting.

I’m surprised to see that nobody mentioned [Les Diaboliques](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046911/) (1955). It’s one of the most suspenseful films I have ever seen. Definitely worth getting a hold of. (Don’t bother with the 1996 US version–it’s awful in comparison.)

If you want creepy, watch [Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067992/). I get nightmares every time I watch it… Damn Oompa Loompas.

**Dog Soldiers** , maybe? It’s a good one.

I seem to recall “People Under the Stairs” was pretty scary and not too gory.

And did anyone else mention “Something Wicked This Way Comes”? Cuz that’sup there, too.

Sounds like the right title…

> I believe it would, **vivalostwages** , if only _because_ it scared the piss out of you when you saw it the first time. It’s possible that the reason I’m such a big fan is that it made quite an impression on me when I was young. When I watch it today, it takes me back to the terrified kid hunkered down in my seat. I’ve watched many, many horror movies since then and there are few things that hit me like that final scene. Oy.

Update:

Just finished watching this about ten minutes ago. The final scene is, indeed, pretty scary, until right before the Big Payoff when it kinda lost me. Really great building of tension. I found myself seriously dreading what was behind the door, even though I was pretty sure what it was.

The rest of the movie…glacial pacing, not necessarily bad, but probably slower than a lot of people would be comfortable with watching. Some truly creepy moments (the Chauffeur was awesome), terminally stupid characters.

I’d give it a solid B. Good movie.

Hm. Time to sift throught his thread for more films… 🙂

> What I DON’T like: I want to avoid movies along the lines of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I do NOT enjoy seeing people being tortured, dismembered or struck with blunt (or sharp) weapons. I do not enjoy gore, so that rules out the sophomoric Jason/Halloween/Chucky series.

> Any recommendations?

Funny you should mention TCM. If you’ve really watched the film, you’d find that there is almost _no_ blood or gore in the original. IMHO, this is a tribute to Tobe Hooper’s technique–everybody _thinks_ it’s an absolute gorefest, but most of the illusion comes from atmosphere and camera angles (tho’ the title doesn’t hurt any).

When I was a kid, I can remember two films in particular that scared the whooziwhatzis out of me: **The Creeping Unknown** (the first Quatermass film) and **Carnival of Souls**. In fact, I have Carnival to thank for allowing me to figure out **The Sixth Sense** ten minutes into the film.
