I'm Looking for Scary/Terrifying Movies That Aren't Drenched in Blood

On the subject of remakes, I’ll suggest Thirteen Ghosts. I haven’t seen the original but the remake is plenty scary. There’s one oogy bit where the lawyer gets cut in half by a glass wall but that’s it. Every fan of Tony Shalhoub should see this once.

I musta blocked out more of that movie than I thought. All I remember is Creepy Sam Neill.

Nice and clean but at the time I loved Watcher in the Woods its disney no nothing messy or even real scary but lots of atmosphere and little surprises.

Definitely the 1963 version of The Haunting.

I’m surprised to see that nobody mentioned Les Diaboliques (1955). It’s one of the most suspenseful films I have ever seen. Definitely worth getting a hold of. (Don’t bother with the 1996 US version–it’s awful in comparison.)

If you want creepy, watch Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. I get nightmares every time I watch it… Damn Oompa Loompas.

Dog Soldiers, maybe? It’s a good one.

I seem to recall “People Under the Stairs” was pretty scary and not too gory.

And did anyone else mention “Something Wicked This Way Comes”? Cuz that’sup there, too.

Sounds like the right title…

That’s the one! Good stuff.

Gorier than I remember, too. Poo.

Update:

Just finished watching this about ten minutes ago. The final scene is, indeed, pretty scary, until right before the Big Payoff when it kinda lost me. Really great building of tension. I found myself seriously dreading what was behind the door, even though I was pretty sure what it was.

The rest of the movie…glacial pacing, not necessarily bad, but probably slower than a lot of people would be comfortable with watching. Some truly creepy moments (the Chauffeur was awesome), terminally stupid characters.

I’d give it a solid B. Good movie.

Hm. Time to sift throught his thread for more films…

Funny you should mention TCM. If you’ve really watched the film, you’d find that there is almost no blood or gore in the original. IMHO, this is a tribute to Tobe Hooper’s technique–everybody thinks it’s an absolute gorefest, but most of the illusion comes from atmosphere and camera angles (tho’ the title doesn’t hurt any).

When I was a kid, I can remember two films in particular that scared the whooziwhatzis out of me: The Creeping Unknown (the first Quatermass film) and Carnival of Souls. In fact, I have Carnival to thank for allowing me to figure out The Sixth Sense ten minutes into the film.
