I'm looking for stories in which a people decide to go gentle into that good night.

The Anasazi?

Ray Bradbury’s “The Last Night of the World.” You can find it in The Illustrated Man.

The Illearth War (Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever): The Seareach Giants find out that their treasured triplet children have become Giant-Ravers. They are appalled that they could be corrupted into such horrific monsters, pack their belongings and put their fires out, and wait patiently and passively at home while Kinslaughterer massacres every last one of them (except Saltheart Foamfollower, who does not live there).

Not exactly “going gentle” – more, violently resisting, but enviseageably “ready to go”. Occurs in S.M. Stirling’s “Draka” alternative-history novel series – more specifically, in the second of same, Under The Yoke. The Draka of this series are sort-of “Nazis on steroids”, flourishing around the middle of the 20th century: a society based in southern Africa, essentially white-supremacist but without the Nazis’ genocidal hate of any particular group – they are happy to spare any lesser types, so long as those are willing to submit to enslavement by them. As at around the 1940s, the Draka – the most technologically-advanced people on Earth, especially as regards weapons of war – have conquered, and are dominant in, virtually all of Africa / Europe / Asia.

In this, they are given exceptional trouble by the people of Finland: who doggedly continue military resistance vis-a-vis the Draka, against hopeless odds – whilst the young and fit Finns continue guerrilla warfare against the invaders, in the countryside; very many of their older and younger relatives in the cities / towns / villages, commit suicide on a huge scale, to thwart the Draka from bringing pressure on the fighters to surrender, by threatening horrific cruelties against their sedentary kinfolk.

Suggestions are made, that this situation may well result in the Finnish nation ceasing to exist – some of the more bombastic Draka talk about “The soon-to-be-extinct Finns”. Picture got overall, is that this is probably hyperbolic – ultimately Finland will be conquered, and some Finns not in the high heroic mould will be ready to live on as slaves. It is mentioned that a little earlier in history, the Draka – who definitely do not mess about – conquered and subjugated Afghanistan. This involved killing off two-thirds of the country’s population – which is just “business as usual” for the Draka…
