So I’m reading my newspaper today, and Kevin Smith is guesting on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” which is pretty cool and everything. I read the article, because, as you can probably tell by the username, I like Kevin Smith movies.
And then I get to this part:

> [@Marisa Guthrie](#):
>
> Smith, meanwhile, will be back in New Jersey next month to start work on “Clerks 2.”

Holy COW!
I’m psyched, but… what in the name of God is the movie going to be ABOUT?

Anyone know more than me?

[This](http://www.viewaskew.com/theboard/viewtopic.php?t=14125) might help you out some.

I knew the title was going to be _Clerks 2: The Passion of the Clerks_ but beyond that, I got nothing.
Oh yeah, I love your user name.

Ima be the first to say that I hope it’s about more than Kevin Smith’s lack of ideas for new stories, and his pandering for easy money by making a sequel. ☹

I love his first 5 movies, but he seems to have hit a wall or something. I mean, did anyone even _see_ [Jersey Girl](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300051/)?

I guess I’ll just have to damp down my natural inclination to dislike sequels, and hope that he returns to form with [The Passion of the Clerks](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424345/). I mean, he did make some of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen (url=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109445/]Clerks, [Dogma](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120655/), [Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0261392/)).

My fingers are crossed.

I just read Kevin’s notes on [viewaskew.com](http://viewaskew.com) and I’m a lot less worried and a lot more enthusiastic. 😃

> [@Kevin Smith](#):
>
> This is not a grab at the green. Saying so is kinda laughable, if you’re privy to what I make per film now, vs. what I’ll make for this film. Part of the idea about doing “Passion” is to strip away the trappings of success we’ve been enjoying for the last few years, in an effort to get to the raw and pure. None of us are making our usual salaries on this flick; we’re all doing it favored-nations style, with deferments. If the flick does well, we’ll get paid our full-freight on the back-end. If not, we did it for the love. But if I was “all about the green”, I’d be gearing up for “Hornet” or “Fletch” instead. This one’s about the passion; the passion of the “Clerks.”

He rocks. WOOT!

After the crotch-kicking, kidney-punching, curb-stomping awfulness that was Jersey Girl, I’m hesitantly optimistic.

I didn’t hate _Jersey Girl_. In fact, I liked it better than _Chasing Amy_. Nothing tops _Dogma_, though. (It should be noted that I can no longer stand Ben Affleck unless Kevin Smith is involved.)

I’ve been hearing about the sequel for a couple years now. I’m glad to hear that it’s not just to raise money for Jason Mewes’ rehab. And Randle has always been my hero, so that’ll be nice to see, as well.

I’m the only Kevin Smith fan I know who emphatically did not like _Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back_. Maybe i need to watch it again.

I flat out refuse to see _Jersey Girl_. My husband said it wasn’t that bad, but then again he’s a movie whore; he’ll pretty much watch anything and say it wasn’t ‘that bad’.

I’m excited about the prospect of a _Clerks_ sequel, though!

Meet one more. I used to be a huge Smith fan – I met him at the 2000 San Diego Comic Con, got my \*Clerks/Chasing Amy \* screenplay book signed by him, even own the original Jay and Silent Bob action figures. But I thought _JaSBSB_ was a collection of self-indulgent inside jokes and not worth being made into a movie, and I have no desire to see _Jersey Girl_. Plus, his entire body of work as a comic book writer has been disappointing and overhyped or nonexistent and unprofessional.

That said, I’ll still probably see _Clerks 2_.

I did. I loved it. I thought the final shot of the film perfectly caught what it means to be a father and was one of the finest closing shots I’ve ever seen because he got the feeling _exactly right._

Of course, I have a three year-old daughter, so I’m directly in the middle of the target demographic for this film.

I was rather disappointed at the reaction this very sweet film caused: “Oh my God, this film doesn’t have a bunch of Gen-X stoners saying shit and fuck every third line! IT SUCKS!!! KS, you’re a sell-out!”

I realize you didn’t quote me, but I’d like to point out that I’m happy Smith made a movie outside his normal genre. The subject matter of Jersey Girl doesn’t appeal to me at all. The fact that it’s a Smith movie has nothing to do with nothing.

Actually, that last bit was more of a blanket statement rather than a specific response - I didn’t make that clear.

However, how can you claim to be a “Kevin Smith fan,” claim “I’m happy Smith made a movie outside his normal genre”, but then _never see it_ and close it off by saying “The fact that it’s a Smith movie has nothing to do with nothing”?

I mean, I love Mozart, I don’t like operas, but I have seen _Mozart’s_ operas precisely because they’re Mozart’s.

In short: You’re either a fan of the artist or not.

I liked _Jersey Girl_ more than I thought I would. I hadn’t intended to watch it, but then my father (of all people) recommended it.

On either Friday or Saturday night _Clerks_ was on late-night basic cable (and uncensored! Comedy Central, I think), and I tuned in _just_ as the woman in the video store was asking for “Happy Scrappy Hero Pup.” Made me laugh out loud. 🙂

I just remembered enough that it _wasn’t_ spelled the way I thought it should be. But tonight I’m going to drag out the movie, because I could almost swear I’m right and the IMDB’s wrong.

But I’m probably wrong. And so were you. 😛

IMDb is correct. “Randal” I just checked the DVD to be sure.

I saw Kevin at Comic-Con last month, and he was reticent to tell us anything about _The Passion of the Clerks_ other than it was a cheapie movie, sorta going back to basics. I think the crash of _Jersey Girl_ meant more to him than he’s letting on.

See, that’s what makes me think that’s how it’s spelled. I remember when I saw it for the first time, I thought “Gee, I’ve never seen that name spelled that way, how odd.” And Randal doesn’t seem that odd to me.

For the love of Og, someone who’s not at work and has a copy of the movie handy check it and let us know–'cause I know I’ll totally forget to look tonight. 🙂

_Jersey Girl_ was a personal movie, an ode to his daughter.

_Clerks 2_ is the sell-out, regardless of how he puts it. So he gets his money on the back-end? Doesn’t mean he’s not going for the green - the fact that he’s redoing a movie he’s already done merely to please fans who weren’t happy with his last offering is all you really need to know.

I’m sure he’s feeling a little pain, seeing his personal movie get ignored by his “fans” because it didn’t feature what they were expecting: trash-talking stoners.
