Colander, I am not taking the wrong position on this issue, but the one that disagrees with you. There is a difference. OP, had you put in almost zero effort to move, everything could have gone peacefully, and you would have felt satisfied for doing something nice. I know that I try to seize every opportunity to be courteous in public because not only do you make others happy, but you get that sense of satisfaction which feels good. ---

I’m from a small city in Ohio, and I agree with gigi – I can’t imagine ever bothering someone like that after the movie had already begun. Especially when there were plenty of open seats, even if they were closer to the front. I don’t take my shoes off, but if I’ve got a coat on my lap and a purse on the floor and maybe a box of popcorn in my hand – and a movie already playing in front of me, I really really don’t want to move and re-settle. I want to watch the movie! The saddest thing for me about this thread is that there have been a few posters I previously thought were pretty good who have now shown me just how wrong I was. ---

For the last seven years, every cinema I’ve been to has had assigned seating: you select your seat when you purchase the ticket. I now see the genius of that policy. ---
