Oh, for fuck’s sake. The etiquette of moving over to accommodate a couple is irrelevant because the question should never have been asked in the first place. Because the people coming in late should have done what decent, civilized, Og-fearing people do in such a situation–stood in the side aisle against the wall surveying the options, conferred in whispers about whether they would take the open, available seats together or split up to get a more preferred spot, picked seats that minimized having to climb over other patrons, then sat the fuck down, shut the fuck up, and watched the goddamn movie. They did not, apparently, do any of those things. They climbed through a mostly-full row of people in order to stand there blocking other people’s view of the movie, arguing about whether or not more people were going to stand up and move around and block people’s view even further and make even more noise. And once all their climbing around and yapping was done, they texted through the whole movie. Assholes. Disruptive, rude, unmitigated assholes. And that’s without even taking into account their response to the OP’s refusal. That’s not to say that no one should ever ask that question. I’ve asked it myself many a time when A)there were no seats together somewhere and B) it wouldn’t be unduly disruptive. As other people have pointed out, I’ve never seen anyone refuse the request and people often make the offer if they notice the situation. But then again, I have NEVER seen anyone make the request when there were other options to sit together or there would be much in the way of disruption to other patrons. The general expectation everywhere I’ve ever been is that if you have an option to sit together without disrupting anyone else, you sit there. End of story. And fyi, if “I want you to” is a valid reason for someone to request you do xyz, “I don’t want to” is an equally valid reason to refuse to do xyz. ---
