The “Red Delicious” is a demimisnomer. It is undeniably red, and quite attractive - if you need to photograph an iconic apple, that is your strain. But as far as being delicious, I’m afraid the developers of this apple were either greatly misled or had questionable taste.

My vote goes to Fuji, a juicy, crisp and delicious apple for eating in hand.

I can remember getting Red Delicious apples that actually had taste, once upon a time. That was years and years and _years_ ago.

Gala apples are the best ones, though.

I have never in my life, which includes a stint working in a grocery co-op, seen apples or any other produce labeled “new season.”

Gravenstine apples, dude. Preferably gotten at [Gowan’s Oak Tree](http://www.apples4sale.com/) midway through a long car trip. Best cider in the world.

Where I live, “new season” apples are labeled “new crop.” Maybe they do that instead?

I don’t understand the hatred that many people have towards the Red Delicious apple. There is nothing wrong with them. However, the best apple, by far, has got to be the Honey Crisp.

I like Red Delicious. That’s what I buy when they get a load of mushy Granny Smith’s in. Crispness! That’s what’s important!

You’re right, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Red Delicious, if you don’t plan on trying to eat them. Every single Red Delicious I have ever tasted, at any time of the year, from any source, has been mealy and dry. The orchard back home didn’t even grow that variety because they said it didn’t taste good enough.

No, no “new crop” label. No labels of any kind indicating the newness of the produce.

I used to like Delicious apples. Or at least I thought I did. The when class trip we went to orchard (30 11-year-olds running amok climbing trees – _that_ was a good idea) and I ate MacIntosh’s. Then I realized I like Delicious apples only because those were the ones my mom always bought.

Wow did my world changed when I discovered there are so many varieties! My favourite is still Granny Smiths because I like sour stuff and they’re a bit tart.

Don’t like Delicious now at all.

Granted, **Kat** said, the taste seems to have been bred out of them. They just don’t taste… “right” anymore.

A big “yes” to Galas and Fujis, but I’d also like to add Pink Lady apples, which don’t look like much, but are very tasty, indeed.

The only downside to Pink Lady apples, BTW, is that, every time I buy a bag of them, I’m reminded of [this abomination from 1980](http://www.tvparty.com/pink.html). :smack:

That is exactly the problem with them; the growers kept selecting based on looks, and forgetting about taste, and so they have progressively become more and more Archetypical Apple and less and less edible.

> The grocery stores around here (North Shore of Massachusetts) mostly stock McIntosh, Cortland, Red and Yellow Delicious, lately Fuji, and Granny Smith apples. But there’s [a local orchard](http://www.goodaleorchards.com/schooltours.php) that grows [14 different varieties of apples](http://www.goodaleorchards.com/farm.php), as well as many other fruits and vegetables, for pick-your-own or purchase in the handsome old barn they use for their store.
>
> They also make unbelievably good cider doughnuts, which you can buy [hot from the doughnut machine.](http://www.goodaleorchards.com/bakeryandstore.php) I generally buy a bag of a half-dozen, and wind up with one or two left by the time I make it to the checkout.

I used to WORK there!!! And they sell REAL red delicious apples–the kind that STILL HAVE FLAVOR! (and are crisp & juicy–not mealy! red delicious get mealy if they’re OLD!)
I used to “make the donuts” too…(can’t tell you how many ZILLIONS of times I heard THAT line…) and the pies…& I’ve bottled cider too…yum…now I want to take a trip back to MA…
