A year ago, I’d have taken the free Whopper happily, and asked for a shake and onion rings besides. Since then, I’ve been diagnosed as diabetic, and have had to change my whole approach to eating. On the plus side, I’ve lost 60 pounds. But I still miss junk food like you wouldn’t believe! ---

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the offer, but no, FUCK no. I used to like Burger King until I had a junior whopper in California while on vacation about a month ago. I started feeling sick a few hours later, and a few hours after that I was spewing evil from both ends. I hadn’t eaten anything else. None of it had been digested. We’d been driving that day and thank goodness we’d gotten to our hotel for the night. It was awful. Since it smelled the same coming back up as it did going down, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to set foot in a BK again. ---

I cut fast food from my diet a long time ago and, even then, hadn’t stepped foot into a BK in a long time. I’m not really a hamburger guy, anyway. However, I did like Whoppers well enough and I’ll sometimes catch a whiff of broiler smoke and find myself a bit tempted. If the host of this party is serving Whoppers, I will happily indulge. Years ago, a guy that was friends of some members of a band I was in was working (or worked?) at Burger King. He tipped me to order Whoppers ‘OTB’ which was off-the-broiler, made fresh. I bardly ever did since it took longer and I didn’t really care enough and I don’t like hassling people at work like that (and I was probably ordering a fish sandwich (easy sauce), anyhow). Do any of their stores still offer pickled jalapenos? They’d have an institutional-sized, 2 or 3 gallon plastic jar of whole jalapenos next the the register for something like 15 cents each. They’d put them into a small fries paper envelope. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. ---

I almost never eat from Burger King or equivalent fast food places, since there are many better burger joints around here. But I’m not fundamentally opposed to the idea. The reason I voted “No, because…of a reason you didn’t list here” is because you’re a random person offering me a burger, and I’m naturally suspicious of your motives. My suspicions would probably first jump to an unwanted conversation (religion, timeshare, etc.), and it just wouldn’t be worth it. If it was a more standard interaction with someone I knew who wanted to go to Burger King I would have no issues. Not my first choice but not so terrible that I’d feel the need to veto it. ---

I consider most of the burger chains better than McDonalds, though I don’t turn my nose up at their food either. There is no Burger King convenient to me these days, so I rarely eat there, but I used to eschew the Whopper proper for two Whoppers Junior, which seemed to have a more pleasing ratio of ingredients. I didn’t like the way the fries they had at the time were only good if you ate them quite fresh. I’m actually quite fond of the way I now cook a hamburger at home, so there’s little for me to crave in a restaurant burger. Many places make better fries than I can cook from frozen at home, but they don’t have the hummus I make to go with them. ---

Actually, let me amend my previous answer: I’d accept the burger _unless_ it came from one specific Burger King franchise near me. I’ve heard some pretty gross stories from students who worked at that one. Fortunately, that location is the _second_-closest one to me, so I’d never seen reason to eat there even before my students tipped me off. ---

The fries are very good, too, but I can’t stand the garish atmosphere and horrible '80s-'90s pop on the sound system, so I always bring the burger home. And by the time you get the fries home (six block walk) they’re already gross. ---

…and if I stop at the local Halal food cart and get a plate of lamb over yellow rice with salad, covered with hot sauce and Angel Jizz, I only have to carry it five blocks and I’ve supported a local business and it’s much deliciouser. And doesn’t give you the squirts. ---

The new Del Taco restaurant in my old home town had a grand opening – all the high school kids were there – and there was something in the food, because everybody got the squirts. Lotta sleep lost that night! It was hell for publicity, and the place went out of business within a few months. It took me years to go back to a Del Taco. These days, I love 'em. ---

I recommend the double whopper. The double thickness of meat adds a lot of great taste. I’ll often order it without fries. That way it isn’t too much. Or I’ll eat half the burger and my wife eats the other half. Depends on how hungry we are.
