[spoiler]For those that hate clicking links blindly: [Oscar Lopez is a guy who’s been posting videos of himself playing covers of Buckethead songs on Youtube for almost a decade now](https://www.youtube.com/user/marlboro123456/videos). He’s originally from Mexico City but has been living in Montreal since 2013. He’s very, _very_ fucking good. The video is him performing during Buckethead’s encore last week in Vermont. Apparently Buckethead saw him in the crowd, recognized him and had someone go ask him if he’d get on stage. He plays a song called Soothsayer and he fucking nails it, while Buckethead works his pedals and stands nearby. The crowd goes suitably nuts, of course. Bumping my own thread because the show was last night and it was everything I dreamed of. All-in-all he probably played for about 2 and a half hours and he was as insanely fast in hour two as he was at the beginning of the show. There were multiple times when Mrs. Cups tapped me on the shoulder and just said “wow!”, that made it pretty worth it right there. He didn’t do too many weird things. He had his toy/nunchuck time and had a blow-up doll kinda thing that he superkicked and eventually threw into the crowd, but that was about it. I figured with his love of Disney and the fact he was here we would get a Disney tune or two and we were not disappointed. He did basically every ride that has a signature tune to it. He did Small World, Grim Grinning Ghosts (from Haunted Mansion), When You Wish Upon a Star and the theme from Pirates. He also audio sampled the Riverboat, ORIGINAL Pirates (no Barbossa) and the train. Pretty funny. Given his age and his medical condition, I feel super privileged that I was able to see him because I don’t know how much longer he can keep this up. ---

I just got home from Buckethead! I’d give the show a 6/10, tops. It was fun; I’m glad I went. The chance of me seeing Buckethead again is exactly zero. ---

First, I hate to get all Marty DiBergi here, but he started over 40 minutes late. That’s never a good thing, IMO. If the show had been advertised as starting at 10pm, I wouldn’t have bought a ticket. 9pm on a weeknight is a late start, but for a good show I can make the exception, since a 9pm start means the show should be over by 11pm, even with an encore. This was not the case last night (more later). His show was good but not great. _He_ is great. His playing is fantastic and he puts on a good show. I really could have done without the 10 minute toy giveaway, but it did afford me time to wonder how he makes any money if he’s giving out $400 worth of Kay-Bee Toys inventory every night. His 2-set show seemed to have basically two different parts. One part was songs of his that I recognized from watching YouTube videos of his live performances and from listening to his pikes. These were great, even tho it’s pretty much a purely mechanical execution. The other part seemed to be him more-or-less vamping on old 1970s and '80s rock songs and riffs, throwing in lots of Disney songs along the way. I could have done without all of these parts and they were about 60% of the show. They were technically excellent, mostly musically tasteful (I hope you like hearing solos that are mostly uninspired scale runs), well-practiced and utterly boring. He’s a much, much more technically gifted guitarist than I am, but FFS, that’s what I do at home. I turn on a drum track or set up a couple that I switch between and then I let loose and see how long I can keep things going before it all falls apart and I switch to another rhythm: [Snow Jam #3](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-F6eIKloX4&index=29&list=PLZlCBvV-cV5yhiC9AQv3yZk96JD7kjeug&t=0s) and [Snow Jam #57](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGsgH55pT3Q&index=59&list=PLZlCBvV-cV5yhiC9AQv3yZk96JD7kjeug&t=0s). I don’t really want to watch someone else’s practice/jam session in the first place, let alone watch a jam that they’ve practiced like 10,000,000 times until it’s just a mechanical exercise for them. The truth is that I was bored after about 40 minutes. I stayed thru most of the 2nd set anyway since I’d spent the money and time to be there, hoping that the good bits would start to outweigh the boring parts, but shortly before midnight I bailed. I took today off, but most people there prolly didn’t so they were out after midnight then prolly had to get up at 5 or 6am to go to work. Buckethead being late caused that. If he had started on time, people could have been home and in bed by midnight and gone about their lives just fine. A performer being more than a few minutes late without just cause is disrespectful, IMO. People WANT to see you, have paid hard-earned money to see you AND have dragged themselves out of their homes and down to this venue to see you… give them the show. You are lucky that we are here to see you; we are not lucky that we get to see you: we paid for this. I’m pretty sure this is the first show I’ve left early in like 30 years, too. I had been standing since 8:40 with only a brief break (I was actually glad that Buckethead was late going back on for set #2 since it gave me a longer rest in a slot chair) and I had been up since 6am. I’m thrilled that this guy is around and I think it’s awesome that he’s able to make a living playing guitar despite having no hit songs, not ever (really) being in a band and being a freak (fly that freak flag high, brothers & sisters!), but in the future I’ll support him by buying a CD or two with my $25 instead of going to a show. The show was good: his playing and performance are great. The actual music is so-so. His punctuality will likely not inspire documentary filmmakers. I’m glad I went but I see no need to revisit. ---

That’s honestly how a lot of his show for me was too…guess I’m just more forgiving than you are 😛 I will say that he started about 40 min. late for us too, which was enough to annoy me. Not glad to see it happened to other people, but glad to see it wasn’t just us. ---

Bumping this thread, because the thread title now applies to me… Yeah, I am going to see Buckethead at his upcoming show in Sacramento at Ace of Spades. He also has a show in San Francisco at the Fillmore. I am not aware of any other dates he is playing at this point. This will be my first time seeing him live, and my first concert since before the pandemic. And, I have no one else to tell!! Anyway, it was this very thread that started me down this path where I listen to Buckethead’s music nearly every day - so for the past 5 years. In fact, I can point to the post by @pulykamell above where he references Mt Shasta as the starting point - I started there and just gradually tried out the multitude of albums (“Pikes”) and just got lost in Bucketheadland. Now, 5 years after this thread started, when there was about 274 pikes, there are more than twice that created and released - over 500 albums! A lot of the last 150 or so have been live tracks he probably had saved, but there is still a lot of new material being produced and released. I am more into the riffy jam sessions and power rock stuff, as well as some of the mellow/melodic music. There is so much material I am always finding new tracks I like, even from the earlier material. I am not so much into the shredding and experimental noises, but I don’t need to like everything Buckethead produces. Anyway, I am looking forward to the show. I figured I owe it to myself to see him live at least one time. Hoping for a good show - I am reading I should bring earplugs LOL. Thanks @Sir_T-Cups for starting this thread way back when! ---
