Brief highjack, but, in very much the same vein as, “Oh, it’s cold out tonight, so global warming must be nonsense,” southern California just had a couple of rainstorms, which dropped a few inches of water on us.

Now, we actually have idiots declaring, “The drought is over!”

Not really, it’s quite on topic. People using short term events, and confusing them for climate, is a major theme in topic.

Which is human nature. People have ALWAYS been like this. The weather, especially in California, isn’t even that big of a mystery. Due to an abundance of evidence, and especially the very long lived trees there, we know a lot about California climate in the past.

That any of it seems some great mystery, or that anyone is freaking out over the current conditions, shows just how ignorant the media and current consensus science is.

> The 1934 drought affected about seven times more land area than other large droughts that hit North America between the years 1000 and 2005, and was almost 30 percent worse than the 1580 drought, the second most severe drought to hit the continent in the past 1,005 years.
>
> “We noticed that 1934 really stuck out as not only the worst drought, but far outside the normal range of what we see in the record,” lead researcher Ben Cook said in a statement. [If you actually look at the climate records](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/04/00/pcp/8/08/1895-1935?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1901&lastbaseyear=2000&filter=true&filterType=binomial), California looks like it is going through a climate cycle, and while it is indeed bad, it’s not unusual. This is exactly why we use science, not what is happening this year, to understand climate.

[The thirties were extremely bad for California](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/04/00/pcp/ytd/12/1895-1935?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1901&lastbaseyear=2000&filter=true&filterType=binomial), as well as most of the US. It’s the ignorance about this that makes people freak out over the present. It has to be by design, since the facts are no great secret in regards to precipitation.

I searched twitter for the phrase California drought is over. Here are the tops hits I found:

I did find this:

> [@](#):

> that drought in California is over now.

The tweet links to a Scientific American post:

[What is This Atmospheric River That is Flooding California](http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2014/12/11/what-is-this-atmospheric-river-that-is-flooding-california/)

The Scientific American article is actually pretty similar to a lot of the global warming stories I have seen. It talks about a serious threat of monster storms and flooding but doesn’t actually make any clear predictions.

And yes, I agree it’s idiotic to declare the drought to be over based on speculation contained in a science magazine. Kinda reminds me of the people who claimed a few years back that snow would soon be a thing of the past in Britain.

To be fair, at the time of the ill advised prophecies of snow, the models and theory, along with a climate cycle of warming winters and reduced snowfall, were strong evidence of a trend for much warmer winters, with reduced snowfall.

[You can see this in the snow data](http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_anom.php?ui_set=1&ui_region=eurasia&ui_month=2). You can also see why [the predictions were so very very wrong](http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_anom.php?ui_set=1&ui_region=eurasia&ui_month=1).

Based on the data, it won’t be a surprise if [this winter is another heavy snow winter for North America](http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_anom.php?ui_set=1&ui_region=namgnld&ui_month=12).

Just like how we can estimate [the summer snow will be very low](http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_anom.php?ui_set=1&ui_region=namgnld&ui_month=6).

That’s priceless. It really is. My consistent position, based on the facts, has been clear, and always backed up with cites, evidence and clear reasoning. Anyone who has actually paid attention knows the three main points.

Boreal winters have been cooling.

This boreal cooling trend is the reason for the global annual mean to be flat, or even cooling.

The computer models didn’t predict this, and can’t reproduce this event.

The bigger issue is of course that the basic global warming theory doesn’t predict this at all.

The fuckhead considers this trolling. Which is just fucking hilarious. It really is.

Here is some simple and clear evidence that shows these points are now showing up in scientific papers.

> [@](#):
>
> The largest discrepancy between observed and simulated trends in cold extremes is found in the Northern mid-latitudes (20 °N–45 °N), **where observations indicate a coherent zonal band of decreasing trends over the recent 15 years**. This might be connected to the recent hiatus in the warming of global Tmean, which has been characterized mainly as a winter phenomenon (e.g., Kosaka and Xie 2013, Cohen et al 2012).

> [@](#):
>
> Spatial trend patterns differ for the warm and cold extremes, with the warm extremes showing continuous positive trends across the globe and **the cold extremes exhibiting a coherent cooling pattern across the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes that has emerged in the recent 15 years and is not reproduced by the models**.

[Radware Captcha Page](http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/9/6/064023/)

> [@](#):
>
> Current consensus on global climate change predicts warming trends driven by anthropogenic forcing, with maximum temperature changes projected in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) high latitudes during winter. **Yet, global temperature trends show little warming over the most recent decade or so.**

> [@](#):
>
> In summary, **large-scale cooling has occurred during boreal winter over much of the NH landmasses over the last two and a half decades**

In this brand new paper, they just come out and say it.

> [@](#):
>
> While the period associated with the recent slowdown of global warming, 1998-2013, is too brief to estimate trends reliably, **cooling was evident in NH warm and cold anomalies during January and February while other months in the NH continued to warm.**

Which is exactly what I pointed out [in the topic that was locked](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=716196). Warming has continued for most of the year, but the cooling trend for boreal winters is so strong, it brings the global annual mean down, so that it looks flat, or slightly cooling.

And of course I showed all my work, so that anyone who was skeptical could check.

So keep posting one liners, and thinking you aren’t the troll, it amuses me.
