Ahem. Please amend the wording in the above link to “…permafrost is melting _in_ Siberia…”

The management regrets the omission of the word “in.”

> Inhofe is completely correct, of course: It was very, very cold on Thursday—unseasonably so. And it was also very, very hot in Opa Loca Florida, where the temperature was 87º F (30º C)—awfully sweltering even for that part of the country, at least at this time of year. Presumably, Opa Loca’s unseasonable steam bath is equally compelling proof that climate change is real.

[Sen. James Inhofe Throws Snowball, Proves Climate Change a Hoax | TIME](http://time.com/3725994/inhofe-snowball-climate/)

Look you ignorant Editor at Large for TIME, (and I mean Jeffrey Kluger), it’s [Opa-locka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opa-locka,_Florida), so when you are trying to make a US Senator look bad (not a hard task), get your facts straight, OK? Seriously. Also, you could have used Miami, and everyone would know where you meant. Of course like Miami, that Thursday in Opa-locka was warm, [just like it was in 1961](http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KOPF/2015/2/26/DailyHistory.html?req_city=Opa-locka&req_state=FL&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=33055&reqdb.magic=1&reqdb.wmo=99999). Of course if you actually knew anything, did any research at all, you would have known that in Miami for Thursday Feb 27 2015, where it was also 87F, the record is 88F, [from 1897](http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KMIA/2015/2/26/DailyHistory.html?req_city=Miami&req_state=FL&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=33010&reqdb.magic=2&reqdb.wmo=99999). Or maybe you did know that, which is why you made up a place in FL to make your point. Who knows? Maybe you avoided using Miami (and providing a link) because [on the 20th Miami was record cold](http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KMIA/2015/2/20/DailyHistory.html?req_city=Miami&req_state=FL&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=33010&reqdb.magic=2&reqdb.wmo=99999)? So was [Key West](http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KNQX/2015/2/20/DailyHistory.html?req_city=Key%20West&req_state=FL&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=33040&reqdb.magic=1&reqdb.wmo=99999), but you can’t report that, it makes it seem like the record cold was extensive, and, well, record cold.

But no, you used the good old “Opa Loca’s unseasonable steam bath” as evidence of global warming. To make a point. As you say

> [@](#):
>
> Either he really doesn’t understand that weather isn’t climate, that long-term trends are different from short-term bumps, that what happens at your house or in your town really, truly isn’t what’s happening everywhere else on the planet, or he does know and he’s pretending he doesn’t.

But here’s the thing. You don’t understand weather either. Or you wouldn’t say ignorant shit about “Opa Loca’s unseasonable steam bath”, because if you knew the first thing about weather, you would know it is warm like that, in south Florida, all the fucking time in February. That’s the climate there. When it says the average high is 76F, that’s because half the time it’s warmer than that. It doesn’t mean a 10 degree higher day is unusual. Hell, [in 2014 there were ten days at 84F there](http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KOPF/2003/2/28/MonthlyHistory.html?req_city=Opa-locka&req_state=FL&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=33055&reqdb.magic=1&reqdb.wmo=99999). 18 days were above 80. It was a warm February, 2014.

In 2015 there were [6 days above 80](http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KOPF/2015/2/26/MonthlyHistory.html?req_city=Opa-locka&req_state=FL&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=33055&reqdb.magic=1&reqdb.wmo=99999) And only two really warm days. It was actually a fucking cold month this year. Miserable.

So when it’s 41 in Opa-locka, that’s 21 degrees below average. When it’s 87, that’s 11 above average. Guess which one is unusual?

But like with a US Senator, facts aren’t the important thing. The difference is, as a TIME editor, we expect you to be right. Nobody is really surprised by a US Senator being dumb.

So don’t type out “awfully sweltering even for that part of the country, at least at this time of year.”, when you don’t know fuck about what you are talking about. Maybe you should have reported on all the cold records being broken? If it was warm records, we know you would have.

First experimental proof of enhanced greenhouse effect! Go science! Using very advanced instruments, and a lot of time, researchers showed, by removing all other sources of infrared … fuck it, in the articles words:

> [@](#):

So the enhanced greenhouse theory (basic global warming theory, the CO2 theory, etc) has experimental proof.

> [@](#):

> They linked this trend to the 22 parts-per-million increase in atmospheric CO2 between 2000 and 2010.

I’m sure there are people who don’t believe an increase in CO2 will cause an enhanced greenhouse effect, and this will probably do little to change their minds, but who cares? This is exactly the sort of science that needs to be done at many locations, all the time.

Warmer air does not cause more snow, something any basic meteorology text will learn ya, but fuckheads never read books, or they wouldn’t be fuckheads. “Very cold” temperatures (i.e.: [below -10°F)](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=18167676&postcount=3895) hold very little moisture, therefore have very little potential for snow. Well, for sure it’s a losing battle. Reality is not on his side. But the goal is not to persuade, exactly, but rather to put doubt in people’s minds. Just as the apologists for leaded gas and tobacco did, and evolution deniers do today.

ETA: I observed a typo in my previous post: “I still say his posts make a lot more sense if you think of him [del]not[/del] as an industry shill…” I originally had “not an idiot” in that line and deleted all but the “not,” inadvertently.

Why has the northern East Coast been getting so much snow this winter? You think the source is simploy the cold air? Then where’d all the moisture come from?

[The Subtropical Jet Stream, which carries warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico eastward has deviated far to the north instead.](http://www.bostonglobe.com/2015/02/10/why-blame-jet-stream-arctic-air-for-repeat-snowstorms/gXwQsk3HKZ57t3PEoKScLI/story.html)

Cold, dry air + warm, moist air = heavy snow = “warmer means more snow”.

Q.E.D.

Now please stop trying to argue your way out of that corner by digging. You’ll only end up with a hole big enough for **Bo** to throw things into.
