While I won the bet for this winter in the northeast, and north central, mother nature showed how hard is actually is to predict everything. Now it looks like I am going to lose for March. (I predicted warm based on the twenty yer trend, [despite the last two years showing drastic cooling](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/121/00/tavg/1/03/1995-2014?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1995&lastbaseyear=2014)) I should have stuck to my guns [using the Tmin](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/121/00/tmin/1/03/1995-2014?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1995&lastbaseyear=2014) as predictor. But fuck me, it could still get unusually warm and bring the average up.

The last three highs were followed by [a one two three warm again pattern.](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/123/00/tmin/1/03/1995-2014?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1995&lastbaseyear=2014) I still predict a warm March for the south, based on trends,

I still think [the West will turn cool and wet](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/124/00/tavg/1/03/1995-2014?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1995&lastbaseyear=2014), but it’s just what [the trend might lead one to guess at](http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/time-series/us/124/00/pcp/1/03/1995-2014?base_prd=true&firstbaseyear=1995&lastbaseyear=2014).

> Snow cover is not the same thing as snowfall, surely?

It depends, but usually snowfall leads to snow cover. It certainly isn’t the other way around. Lack of snowfall never leads to more snow cover.

Heavy snow also usually leads to longer snow cover, but not always. Heavy rain after a snowfall can wipe out the snow cover. If precipitation increased, and temperatures increased, more rain and less snow will lead to far less snow cover.

It’s why decreasing snow cover is a key indicator of a warming climate. skepticalscience blog is not wrong about that. And looking at the GLOBAL temps and GLOBAL snow cover data clearly shows warmer is directly connected to LESS snow cover annually.

You are an idiot. But please, don’t stop posting, you serve as an example. Of what not to aspire to.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, researchers document and argue for a well known effect, which actually really does exist, and changes the climate.

> [@](#):
>
> What they found is that cloud-bottom heights have risen at airports where there was the most urban growth. The pattern is especially clear at at night and early morning, when fog is most common.
>
> “At night and early morning, that’s when clouds are closest to the ground,” explained Williams. “That’s when fog clouds deposit water directly on plants. This effect has been weakened.”
>
> “The cloud water inputs are really important” along the entire West Coast, concurred Todd Dawson, a biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who studies plants and their environments, and is not a coauthor on the GRL paper. The effect that Williams reports, he said, could potentially harm groves of the legendary central California coast redwoods – among the tallest trees in the world – in zones where human settlements encroach on the forests.
>
> “Redwood forests get 35 percent of all their water in the form of fog drip,” Dawson explained, referring to the adaptations redwoods and many less conspicuous coastal California plants have for obtaining water from foggy air. “If the fog declines, you not only remove water inputs and cooling effects, but the warming means more evaporation. You are really changing the local micro-climate.”

[More urban heat; less summer fog, on California coast - GeoSpace - AGU Blogosphere](http://blogs.agu.org/geospace/2015/03/05/urban-heat-less-summer-fog-california-coast/)

Yes, people really are changing the world, there’s just so many of us, and so much concrete and deforestation.

> [@](#):
>
> Another surprising discovery was what Williams and his colleagues saw on the undeveloped airfields on islands off the coast of southern California: Cloud height lowered over the last 60 years.
>
> The temperature inversion layer in the atmosphere that holds the moist marine air close to the ground (the same inversion that can hold smog near the ground) actually has been getting stronger, making it harder to break up the clouds, Williams said. It’s the opposite trend to what was seen in the urban areas,

No surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. Large urban areas fuck up the natural order of weather and climate. You really were surprised by this?

> [@](#):
>
> The temperature inversion layer in the atmosphere that holds the moist marine air close to the ground (the same inversion that can hold smog near the ground) actually has been getting stronger, making it harder to break up the clouds, Williams said. It’s the opposite trend to what was seen in the urban areas, which suggests another long-term climate trend, like global warming, is causing the change, he added. “In the absence of urbanization we might see an increase in fog,” he concluded.

What? That’s all you got out of your study? Local heating effects change the weather, and you think it’s global warming causing the change?

I’m sick of this global warming.

> Increasing CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere, being a well mixed gas, persists and increases in all parts of the atmosphere, and since it absorbs and heats and re-radiates some of the IF red not absorbed by any other greenhouse gas, causes a positive imbalance of the radiation budget, leading to warming. The source of the increase in CO2 is both from the warming that naturally is occurring, the oceans release more CO2 than they absorb as they warm, as well as from fossil fuels and cement making. It is also thought that due to deforestation there is a further decrease in the natural sinks, leading to more CO2 staying in the atmosphere each year.
>
> That is the basics. There is of course an increase in other greenhouse gases, some of them artificial compounds with a very long life, and a huge amount of greenhouse effect, which also destroy O3, leading to both warming and cooling effects in the upper stratosphere. NO2 from combustion and agriculture, methane from natural gas leaks, black carbon from incomplete combustion, particulates and aerosols, like SO2 and human caused lower troposphere ozone, changes to hydrology from dams and irrigation and pumping ground water, NO2 and H2O in the lower stratosphere from aircraft, and contrails, as well as vast destruction of tropical and boreal forests for pulp and timber, a huge phosphate imbalance from mining for agriculture use, a huge nitrogen increase from making fertilizers, changes to albedo from paving and rooftops, destruction of reefs and wetlands, and on and on and so forth.
>

> The expected feedbacks from the small amount of CO2 forcing calculated are the real issue, as well as ocean acidification, which could be the biggest problem, but that is far from certain. Once you get into the possible feedbacks, which are usually the realm of fear mongering and disaster scenarios, it get a lot less scientific.
>
> Hows that for starters?

The more technical matters involving changes to the absorption/emission spectrum of CO2 at high altitudes, as well as the issue of high atmospheric CO2 reducing the infrared forcing from solar changes, as well as changes in atmospheric chemistry on the upper stratosphere, cloud top heating and drastic changes to the hydrological cycle, ocean meridian overturning, and especially the … ah but fuck it, we still have idiots who think water vapor only has a positive feedback effect, and any increase in WV means more heating.

How stupid are all these experts to not factor in snow?

What it does is make me someone who is willing to call a spade a spade: I _couldn’t care less_ whether you respond or not. What I care about most is helping reinforce to casual thread passers-by that you’re a fucking industry shill who is knowingly sowing obfuscation and confusion.

When I type out “No, but it’s effective at getting the point across”, I don’t actually mean that, since nothing is going to get through somebodies head if they have already made up their mind. It’s almost sarcasm, but it’s actually **an ironic statement**. The point is obvious, but fuckheads can’t grasp obvious. While the statement was a general observation about people and belief systems, and how they prevent learning, it was taken as literal, and we see a fuckhead reaction.

It’s what fuckheads do. They can’t argue, so they act like it’s all somebodies else’s “fault”, and they get personal.

It’s pathetic actually. But attempting to educate a fuckhead is a lost cause. You know in your heart this is true.

And thanks for that edit, I was getting ready to ask you what you meant.

> I get a lot of letters like yours, Jon, basically asking me, a weekly alternative newspaper columnist, to resolve one of the great controversies of our age. Hey, somebody’s gotta do it. However, given an 800-word limit, you’ll excuse my taking a few shortcuts. So here we go: Are greenhouse-gas emissions from our fuel-guzzling cars, power plants, etc, a significant contributor to potentially catastrophic climate change? Answer: Beats me. But you know what? It doesn’t matter even if they are.
>
> We’ll start with Essenhigh. The professor argued in a 2001 article in Chemical Innovation that average global temperatures were rising but that, contrary to wide popular and scientific opinion, human activity wasn’t the principal cause. Rather, the fluctuations we’re now seeing are part of a natural cycle that’s been going on for eons. Essenhigh’s reasoning appealed largely to common sense: Carbon dioxide, the most widely discussed greenhouse gas, is part of earth’s vast store of carbon (about 150 billion tons), which is continually being cycled through the oceans, the atmosphere, and vegetation. The human contribution to atmospheric carbon in the form of CO2 is small, less than 5 percent of the total carbon reservoir. Ergo, humans aren’t causing global warming. I omit a lot of ancillary discussion, but that’s the nub.

> I forgot all about that idiot claim. It was in response to my using irony to make a point. Fuckheads don’t understand irony, or they pretend not to, because it makes a point they “don’t like”, which is hilarious. When I type out “No, but it’s effective at getting the point across”, I don’t actually mean that, since nothing is going to get through somebodies head if they have already made up their mind. It’s almost sarcasm, but it’s actually **an ironic statement**. Most people have no problem figuring this out, but warmist fuckheads will actually pretend not to get it, and then try and claim “you are saying something that contradicts what you said before hurr durr”. Yes you dumbass, it’s called irony.
