What are the odds that the warmest year “ever recorded” shows February as colder than it was 79 years ago?

Or more importantly, what are the odds that at the peak of global warming, in many locations, February 2015 is the coldest February ever recorded? Is that global warming? (Cohen and others theorize it is)

It certainly isn’t what basic global warming theory predicts. But is it global warming? As I said before, if it is, then that means the trend could continue. It could keep getting colder, with more snow, even as global warming happens.

Which is actually really bad climate change. If it is global warming causing the coldest winter ever, for important places in the world, then this could mean it will keep happening. In fact, if warming is causing cooling, it is certain it will keep happening.

At which point somebody sick of the snow and cold, can actually say “I am so sick of this global warming”, and they aren’t being sarcastic.

No. A month is not a trend. How about “it hasn’t warmed for 20 years?” Have you tried that? More convincing.

That’s an interesting tactic. Especially from someone who refuses to discuss the issue. The issue of snow came up again, no doubt prompted by actual snow breaking records, and being impossible to ignore. Some idiot politician also threw a snowball, which would be funny if it wasn’t so snowy right now. Brazil brought up the infamous “children won’t know what snow is”, because climate scientists had been bemoaning the lack of snow and cold winters, when therer was a lack of cold winters and snow.

> [@brazil84](#):
>
> Let me ask you this: If it’s so simple and obvious that increased global surface temperatures will result in more snow, surely this point would have been made repeatedly in the IPCC reports. Agreed?

Of course the warmers have no answer, so it’s tap dancing, even trying to claim “more snow means it’s getting warmer”, which is about as far from reality as one can actually get.

> [@Skywatcher](#):
>
> Funny how you left off this part:
>
> > [@](#):
> >
> > Heavy snow will return occasionally, says Dr Viner, but when it does we will be unprepared. “We’re really going to get caught out. Snow will probably cause chaos in 20 years time,” he said

When asked directly if he agrees with that, it’s typical warmer avoidance.

> [@Skywatcher](#):
>
> With such a poorly written article, that’s difficult to say.

Of course he already had “translated” the article for us.

> [@Skywatcher](#):
>
> Allow me to translate the good doctor: “Increased global surface temperatures will result in more snow per storm but fewer storms overall.”

So one migh ask, “Does that mean less snow cover or not?”

Which is the obvious question. If children won’t know what snow is, does that mean more snow or less snow? (that’s a rhetorical question, nobody can be stupid enough to think he meant it would be snowing more)

And just as obvious he was talking about the rare snowstorm would catch people by surprise, since it hadn’t snowed in twenty years, nobody would be prepared when it did.

But in _ **the warmer world** _ anything is possible. He actually meant it would snow more when it did snow (cause warmer means more snow), but over all there will be less snow (because warmer means less snow)

So it doesn’t matter to the warmer what happens, it’s all global warming, because in _ **the warmer world** _ it’s actually impossible for anything to not be global warming, because they “know” it’s happening, so as Trenberth said, all weather events are impacted by global warming.

Who can argue with that sort of hard nosed scientific logic?

It’s why mockery and humor seem so much better ways to deal with the continual clown parade of predictions of doom, and the hand wringing and anger from those who hate global warming, but not enough to actually do anything about it.

Or to even discuss it.

The link and commentary on the obvious effect of enormous urban centers in SoCal, how does a warmer deal with that? Windmills and solar panels won’t change that problem. In fact, it might make it worse.

I don’t even pay attention to such charges, since I supply the source, so anyone can read the entire piece, and nobody, and I mean nobody needs to here once again that it’s going to get warmer in the future. You act like it’s some sort of secret if I leave that part out.

But meanwhile you ignore (or “leave out”) discussing anything that seems to go against your preconceived idea, which means you actually miss a lot. For example

> [@FXMastermind](#):

You focus on one thing, and never address the science.
It’s interesting to look at the GISS maps, and see the changes.

[1900-1910](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1112&year1=1900&year2=1910&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob) cooling

[1910-1940](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1112&year1=1910&year2=1940&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob) warming

[1940-1970](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1112&year1=1940&year2=1970&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob) cooling

[1970-2000](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1112&year1=1970&year2=2000&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob) warming

[2000-2014](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1112&year1=2002&year2=2014&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob) cooling

It’s interesting how the previous cooling compares to the recent cooling period

[1955-1970 winter trend](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1203&year1=1955&year2=1970&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob)

[summer trend](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=0603&year1=1955&year2=1970&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob)

This may increase confidence that the current change isn’t natural variation, as the current “cooling” is not the same at all (it’s actually postulated that the global cooling was also due to human pollution at the time) Past cooling wasn’t just in winters.

[2000-2014 winter trend](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=1203&year1=2000&year2=2014&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob)

[2000-2014 summer trend](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=3&type=trends&mean_gen=0603&year1=2000&year2=2014&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob)

Let me repeat that in a way you might be able to see.

> [@](#):
>
> **This may increase confidence that the current change isn’t natural variation** ,

Or, in other words, it makes it seem like Cohen and others may be right, and the current climate change isn’t some natural variable nobody knows about.

> [@](#):
>
> \*\*as the current “cooling” is not the same at all \*\*

In other words, much colder NH winters is not a known change from looking at the recent past record. There may be a problem with how the data has been gathered, or presented, or we may be observing some new type of climate change.

> [@](#):
>
> \*\*(it’s actually postulated that the global cooling was also due to human pollution at the time) \*\*

In the recent past, global cooling happened, but now some are saying that too was human caused changes. Matters like these are important to know about.

> [@](#):
>
> **Past cooling wasn’t just in winters.**

Which is really significant. If this cooling trend (with way more snow) is actually a climate change, that matters. If it’s actually due to pollution and land use changes, it’s far more important to know this.

Now some idiot will claim something, but will offer no evidence. (it might have already happened while I was typing this) (edit - yes, two times)

You hold a position only in a banal sense, the way a monkey flinging poo is also holding a position.

You have no coherent hypothesis of your own. You have no plausible explanation with an ounce of credibility to present as an alternative to mainstream science. All you have is brutish cherry picking and obfuscatory blather, random jibes that cohere about as well as the lumpy excrement it is. You’re rather a lot like a creationist.

That’s what I mean by saying you don’t really hold a position. Fundamentally, you don’t. You don’t understand climate science remotely well enough to mount a serious challenge to the mainstream position. If you did, you could make yourself world famous. But you don’t, and you can’t.

> [@](#):

Nothing of the rambling, disconnected nonsense you’ve written adds to up to anything persuasive, much less a developed hypothesis worthy of anyone’s serious attention.

Luckily, it misses anyone important and mostly just splashes back on yourself. A bit amusing really, but ultimately disgusting and pathetic.

To the extent any of the poo you’re flinging comes from a halfway coherent place, it has been solidly rebutted.

Overall, you don’t have a alternative hypothesis that can stand on its own for a millisecond.

> [@Trinopus](#):
>
> Also, what part of “global” does he not understand?

This has been supported with global data many times. The warmist just ignores it and switches the subject. It’s quite special.

NH Feb land mean 1990-2014

- .89C a century

NH Feb land trend 1995-2014

- 5.41C a century

NH Feb land + ocean trend 1995-2014

- 1.83C a century

Global Feb Land + Ocean trend 1995-2014

- .78C a century

The cooling trend for just the NH Feb land temp is so extreme, it pulls the global mean down, making a global cooling trend for February.

This does not tell the important story, which is just how much colder February has become globally. In the last twenty years.

Only Jan-Feb in the NH hemisphere show this extreme cooling, the rest of the months are flat, or warming. This is not what global warming theory predicts.

In fact, it would be the exact opposite of what we expect to see.

Doesn’t mean it’s not human caused (Cohen et al. 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, etc)

If it is actually due to forcing from snow, it is better evidence for human caused climate change than even the temperature changes. A strong negative feedback from snow cover expansion, from early and heavy snowfall, from decreasing arctic sea ice, (Cohen’s theory), is powerful evidence for both AGW, as well as an unexpected turn of events.

Of course none of that is settled science, much less accepted as consensus science.

Even so, it certainly allows one to complain about record cold and snow by bitching about global warming, with the added benefit it’s your fault it’s happening.

</div>

Since I’ve said multiple times I tend to think Cohen may be right, it actually means I am showing evidence for human caused climate change, and while it’s unfortunate the name global warming is used, (AGW) rather than ACC, mother nature doesn’t give a shit what we call something.

If warming oceans, combined with a negative feedback from increasing snow, is actually causing the winter trend, we might be truly fucked at this point.

Like Cecil said about global warming, it doesn’t matter. Even if it’s being caused by solar changes (another valid theory), or ocean circulation changes, or actually by warming, if it’s a pattern that will continue, and CO2 has anything at all to do with it, we are fucked. Of course even if we have nothing to do with it, we are fucked.

There is no perfect Goldilocks climate, but this winter shit really sucks.

FYI, Boston (and New England) has already crushed, and I mean just crushed, all previous snow records for winter.

The reason 1995-1996 “season” is higher, is because it snowed a lot in March and April that year. For just winter D-J-F, snow totals are so much higher it’s fucking mind boggling is what it is.

80 inches for 95-96 (that used to be the record, and it was indeed a huge record)

100 inches for 2014-15

Is global warming actually increasing snow amounts? That’s a serious question.

Since the 1990-2014 trend for the region that was crushed by cold and snow, it’s reasonable to suspect it’s trend. Will this February make the February trend there colder or warmer?

I just realized that is actually pretty close to the truth. I used to really be mad about the additives in gasoline, first lead, then MTBE, and many people reacted to my being sick of it with anger, abuse and attempts to make light of it all.

Same for mercury pollution, especially in children’s teeth, the nuclear waste problem, pollution from leaking reactors, coal slurry waste ponds, arsenic and mercury pollution from mining, the terrific toxic load from coal fired power plants, oil spills like the Gulf of Mexico horror and the Exxon Valdez disaster, mutant super bugs (bacteria) being created and spread by medical centers, deceptive drug trials and ineffective medical treatments, and the really big one, rising cancer rates in children, along with “mysterious” new ailments on the rise, like Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis, ADHD, ADD, auto immune disorders or autism, it’s a long fucking list.

One huge difference between most of those issues and “global warming” is that with climate you can get your hands on most of the data, and we do have global monitoring of most of the climate indicators now. While at present you can’t just bring up a Google map that shows the cancer rates for any area on earth (much less things like autism, mercury load, lead pollution, groundwater MTBE, levels, etc), anyone can take a look at multiple data analysis for temperature, snow fall, moisture/drought, and even water vapor imagery and SSTs.

My online history of spittle spewing and angry ranting over industry pollution, especially fossil fuels and heavy metals, makes the very thought that some coal or oil industry is funding my skepticism a goddamn joke of infinite jest. Of course it’s just a fuckhead tactic to deflect and ignore and avoid a discussion, but it still makes me chuckle, and also a little sad, to realize that is the intellectual level of people on a message board. Faced with logic and facts and data, they retreat to a fucking conspiracy theory? That I am “a paid shill” for some faceless corporation that actually pays money to some nobody to spread lies on internet forums?

Give me a fucking break.

This betrays a serious lack of understanding about how the world works.

Much like the idiocy about “warmer means more snow” is repeated as some idiot mantra, and the intelligent people quite rightly don’t even want to get into a slap fight with that level of stupid.

Meanwhile, [the Florida Department of Environmental Protection can’t mention “climate change” or “global warming”.](http://www.salon.com/2015/03/09/the_term_climate_change_is_reportedly_banned_in_florida/)

Google is going to start ranking articles for accuracy. [Climate-change deniers](http://www.salon.com/2015/03/06/anti_science_advocates_are_freaking_out_about_new_google_truth_rankings/) [are pissed.](http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2015/03/fox-news-regular-upset-google-will-rank-by-accuracy-let-the-public-decide-whats-the-truth/) One says, one **actually** says, “Let the public decide what’s the truth.”

Forget it, Jake, it’s Twoofertown.

It’s like responding to those 9/11 twoofers who do not believe that planes can crash into buildings; even when provided with pictures of planes inside of damaged buildings, they continue to claim that it is impossible.
