> However, much of the concern with the melting of Antarctica, Greenland and glaciers around the world has nothing to do with sea ice — rather, it involves huge masses of ice sitting atop landmasses in polar regions. Melting of these ice sheets, glaciers and ice caps can contribute substantially to sea level rise —whereas sea ice melting cannot. So already, Taylor’s argument about “polar ice” seems much broader than it actually is.

Let’s see the math here … the ice on Antarctica and Greenland is negligible compared to the total volume of the oceans … go ahead … do the arithmetic … see … very very little sea level rise. Most of the rise is due to simply the expansion of the water as it warms.

The problem is the data set is too small, we’ve only been monitoring the extent of the sea ice since 1979, only 36 years, very hard to say what long range tread is. Sea levels rise about 3 mm (1/8 inch) per year, that’s only a foot per century, save me from your doom and destruction scenarios.

Oh, see, when you linked to that BS article about polar ice not decreasing, I figured you were trying to argue that, you know, polar ice wasn’t decreasing. But no, your argument was actually that the ocean is warming and the polar ice _is_ decreasing, but it doesn’t really matter. Climate is measured in thirty year time intervals, so average all the data we’ve collected and we get one datum, with nothing to compared to. Argo, nothing is demonstrated in climate terms, we’ll have to wait 24 more years.

This brilliant [piece from thinkprogress](http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2015/09/16/3701936/brain-on-climate-change/) may help explain what is going on. What we are seeing is “pre-traumatic stress disorder”, where **those who can see the future are suffering extreme stress over something that hasn’t happened yet**.

> [@](#):
>
> Those who do acknowledge the problem face a different set of issues, particularly those who work on the problem. Lisa Van Susteren coined the term “pre-traumatic stress disorder” to describe the grief, anger, and anxiety clinging to the scientists and advocates whose job it is to gaze into a future that can look increasingly bleak.

So it’s not really the fuckheads fault, they are suffering a medical condition, because they alone can see the future, and it’s terrible.

> [@](#):
>
> There is currently no organized discipline for the study of the psychological risks of climate change, yet it is already taking a toll on many people who tackle this issue. Surprisingly susceptible are those who might seem to be immune.

You see? It’s not really your fault if you are stressed and angry, you just are special enough to be able to see the bleak future ahead. It’s no surprise you are angry, depressed and maybe even a little nuts. Who wouldn’t be? The worst part is what is happening to the poor deniers.

> [@](#):
>
> “The climate deniers? I always say they‘re really too stressed to hear the truth,” said Van Susteren. “We see this kind of thing in my work all the time, where people who aren’t ready to hear the truth about something will simply say it doesn’t exist.”

See? Deniers are too stressed to even hear the truth, so it’s not their fault either. They are just too stressed about the horrible future, so they deny it.

Is it any wonder everybody is sick of this global warming? You are either suffering “pre-traumatic stress disorder”, or you are really really stressed and in complete denial over the bleak future.

Those of us who are skeptics should be more compassionate, the idiots going on about the horror, the horror, they are sick. And so are the people saying there is nothing to worry about. Everybody is all stressed out.

> [@](#):
>
> Said Van Susteren, “Pre-traumatic stress disorder? It’s what I see. It’s what I live. It’s what I see others living.” Scientists and advocates suffering from pre-traumatic stress disorder, she explained, face frequent, intrusive thoughts about the future. “In the worst of cases, it sends them into a feeling of despair,” said Van Susteren. Those battling pre-traumatic stress have accepted the truth about climate change, but rather than turning to a coping mechanism like denial, they have soldiered on, and they have paid for it with grief, sadness, and worry.

So when you see a grief filled sad and worried person going on about how bad things will be, remember they are suffering a disorder.

**Pre-traumatic stress disorder**

Global warming has made them sick. And you thought this topic was just a joke. I told you global warming was making people sick.

Even the people who deny global warming are sick. They are so stressed out they are in complete denial. I don’t know what’s worse, pre-traumatic stress disorder or being so out of it you just act as if the world isn’t ending, but in any case we have to do something about this shit.

> Global surface temperature has risen during the past century, but it is still uncertain whether warming in particular regions can be directly attributed to human activities. The largest warming has occurred over Northern Hemisphere land masses during winter, where temperatures have risen by several degrees during the 20th century. (In comparison, the global, annual average temperature has increased by only half a degree). These dramatic local changes are related to recent changes in atmospheric wind patterns. Hence, it is more likely that they arise from a redistribution of heat around the globe, rather than purely from an enhanced “greenhouse effect”, whereby heat is trapped near Earth’s surface by pollutants such as CO2. The question is whether these recent changes in the winds are merely part of a long term cycle or whether they are linked to the increasing greenhouse effect.

> Why are winters warming up so much faster over Northern Hemisphere continents than over the rest of the globe? A new study by NASA researchers in the June 3 issue of the journal Nature is the first to link the well-documented large degree of North America and Eurasia winter warming and the associated wind changes to rising greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.
>
> Drew Shindell, an atmospheric scientist from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia University, NY, found that the large warming that has occurred during Northern Hemisphere winters over the last 30 years — up to nine degrees Fahrenheit, a full 10 times warmer than the global average 0.9 degree Fahrenheit warming — is likely a result of human activities that increase greenhouse gases.

> [@](#):

> The 1999-2000 season global land and ocean temperatures ranked as the 6th warmest on record, following the two warmest boreal winter seasons set in the past two years. Land temperatures remained well above average, with this season’s departure from long term average ranked as the 4th warmest on record, at 1.4 F degrees above average.
>
> Globally, the warmest global land temperature departures from the average occurred in the past two boreal winters.
>
> Nearly the entire northern hemispheric land mass was warmer than the long term average with only North Africa, the Mediterranean countries, Central America and parts of extreme eastern Asia below average. Most of North America, northern Europe, and Russia experienced well above normal warmth for the season.

> [@](#):
>
> In addition, the Earth’s ice cover is melting in more places and at higher rates than at any time since record keeping began. Reports from around the world compiled by the Worldwatch Institute and released last week show that global ice melting accelerated during the 1990s-which was also the warmest decade on record.

**U.S. records warmest winter on record**

Reuters News Service, March 13, 2000

> WASHINGTON - The winter of 1999-2000 was the warmest winter in the United States since the government began keeping records 105 years ago, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
>
> This marked the third year in a row that record warmth was recorded in the United States during the winter months. Since 1980 more than two-thirds of U.S. winters have been warmer than average, NOAA said.
>
> **NOAA also said global warming** , which most scientists believe is caused by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels like coal and gas, **was partly to blame for the temperature spike**.

Ah the good old days, when basic global warming theory and observational science agreed. that an increasing greenhouse effect would cause winters in the NH to warm the fastest.

A decade later (that would be 2010) the story changed, a lot.

[Yes, the extreme cold in the UK right now really could be a result of global warming.](http://www.monbiot.com/2010/12/20/cold-burn/)

By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 21st December 2010

> [@](#):

> There were two silent calls, followed by a message left on my answerphone. She had a soft, gentle voice and a mid-Wales accent. “You are a liar Mr Monbiot. You and James Hansen and all your lying colleagues. I’m going to make you pay back the money my son gave to your causes. It’s minus 18 degrees and my pipes have frozen. You liar. Is this your global warming?”. She’s not going to like the answer, and nor are you. It may be yes.

Rather than back off, even a little, the alarmists switches stories like it’s noting, and suddenly, AFTER it happens, they tell us that colder winters, and record snow, it’s because of global warming changing the weather patterns.

And since it’s only a small part of the world (which the data now shows is bullshit), since it’s only a “few small areas”, it doesn’t even matter, because GLOBALLY it’s so much warmer than ever, and really, after all, who ever said winters would warm up? It was the media, (you know how they lie about everything), no real climate scientist ever said anything about winters warming.

[Here’s a quick look at what happened between 2000 and 2010 with winter temps.](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=0&type=trends&mean_gen=1203&year1=2000&year2=2010&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob)

[Here’s a much starker picture, which goes up till last February](http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?sat=4&sst=0&type=trends&mean_gen=0201&year1=2000&year2=2015&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=250&pol=rob). Anyone who lived through the last several winters already understands why people might be a little miffed, what with all the talk about warmer winters and the loss of ski resorts and maple syrup, why cities should sell their snow plows, and of course, why the US hasn’t built any icebreakers, or has any being built.

Because you see, the NH winters have to warm, it’s a key part of the basic global warming theory. You can’t have more ice and snow, and record cold winters, especially not more of them in a row, in a greenhouse warming theory.

These regions have yet to manifest obvious warming signals according to the models but it is expected they will appear in the next decade.

It seems they rediscovered the warming hole. This has been brought up here several times. It’s like a doughnut hole, the hole is where there is no warming. It’s one reason why so many Americans are skeptical of the global warming nutjobs. When the data shows it’s getting colder, it’s hard to accept the global doom we are told is fast approaching. Russians have the same problem, since snowfall is increasing, and coming earlier than ever recorded. Which is interesting, as we continue on with this new study.

[NH winter](http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_seasonal.php?ui_set=nhland&ui_season=1)

[NH spring](http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_seasonal.php?ui_set=nhland&ui_season=2)

What does it mean? And is there any predictive power from just the data? What is the cause? Those are scientific questions.

If somebody tells you “it’s global warming”, they are highly likely to be full of crap, since that is certainly not what the models predict, nor what the theory explains.

If the IPCC and the consensus had been “projecting” an increase in snow, and early snow, and record cold for large regions of the NH, then it would make sense. Of course now, after it’s not possible to deny it’s happening any longer, some want to change history and say it is predicted. It was predicted. But they are liars.

You know what I’m sick of? YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT I’MA SICK OF?

Aw, fuck it.

My hot dog buns come in packages of 8 (tee hee). Where’s a guy gotta go to find a naked wiener to eat? (No chili, please! The naked dog is already skating on thin ice. No call to add something that looks like diarrhea. (Huh! I said “thin ice” in **FX** ’s Global Warming thread. Wonder if that will make it onto a wall?))

ETA: And what the hell did New Hampshire ever do to you **FX**?

You know what I’m sick of? I’m sick of pecan pies with too much sugar. Like where it’s just this sugar bomb in your mouth and you can feel your heart start racing and it’s practically sticking your lips together like paste. In fact, I’m kind of sick of pecan pies entirely, too much sugar or not.

And whatever happened to banana cream pies? No one makes them anymore. I guess they’re kind of disgusting, but still.

It is better to have eaten it, thrown it back up, then eaten it again … than to have never eaten it at all.
