Global Warming (i.e., the warming of the globe, not the other meaning you’ve chosen to Humpty Dumpty it) means – the entire globe. The whole of the earth. Some parts will become hotter. Others might not. But the overall average is…warmer.

By definition, forcings are external to the climate system while feedbacks are internal; in essence, feedbacks represent the internal processes of the system. Some feedbacks may act in relative isolation to the rest of the climate system; others may be tightly coupled; hence it may be difficult to tell just how much a particular process contributes. source

Forcings, feedbacks and the dynamics of the climate system determine how much and how fast the climate changes.

The main positive feedback in global warming is the tendency of warming to increase the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, which in turn leads to further warming.[5]

That is wrong of course, but it is Wikipedia, so nobody will be that surprised. In reality there are all kinds of assumed feedbacks for climate change, and the most important ones are all in the polar regions, or directly connected to them.

You fail at simple high school physics when you imply that a cold snap in Boston disproves global warming.

You can keep doing your duck speak, but it isn’t going to matter from a scientific POV. As was discussed elsewhere, the effects from AGW are numerous, and the theory and models of what is expected are very complicted, not some dumb idea “the whole world will get warmer”, which is idiotic.

The MIT model (based on theory) predicts that continued warming will be from increases in SW, not LW radiation. Consensus theory of CO2 warming does not predict this.

Their models also use an increase in SW due to more open water, less ice and snow, changes in vegetation from warming, all of which will increase SW warming. If Cohen’s theory that the cooling NH winter trend, from CO2 caused warming, ( more open water due to decreased arctic sea ice leading to more early snow in Siberia), if that is actually true, then the expected warming the MIT models predict won’t happen in winter at all. In fact, if the cooling trend is really caused by warming, then the basic global warming theory is wrong. The predictions of the most warming in winter, at high latitudes, and over land rather than oceans, is all wrong.

None of that is fact, which is why you see “if that is true”, and “if the cooling trend is really caused”. None of those are facts, but it is reasoning, theory, hypothesis, conjecture and thinking about possible results, which is exactly why I stated science deals with more than facts.

The idea that “it will get warmer” and “it’s basic physics” is the idiot curse of bad science and the idiot press.

FYI, a scientific theory is made up of many parts, many of them basic physics. Saying a theory is wrong does not mean the basic principles or axioms in a theory are wrong. That view is idiotic. If somebody was objecting to E=MC2, they aren’t saying that the speed of light is wrong, or that there is no matter or energy. They are objecting to the = sign, or the squaring of the speed of light.

There are few feelings as good as being a scientist, and being right. I’ve said it in many threads, and certainly it’s a main theme in this one, that it is possible Cohen is right, both in theory and in reality. The sat data for snow cover certainly supports his theory, as does the cooling winter trends for large parts of the northern hemisphere.

Perhaps Cohen’s biggest claim to fame comes from the fact that he and his team’s seasonal forecasts of “temperature and precipitation anomalies” have been right 75 percent of the time, a rate that tops those of the major government weather centers, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal government’s main weather forecaster. (In fact, Cohen and his team, who have been making predictions for 15 years, bestedNOAA this winter.)

As he points out, multiple times in his peer reviewed science papers, consensus models do not predict what has been observed.

Each October, Cohen looks at the amount and the rate of snowfall in Siberia that month to determine how snowy the eastern United States and Europe will be come winter. “The snow cover is the most efficient reflector of sunlight out into space, so more snow cover creates dense air masses that stay close to the ground,” he says. That cold, dense air spreads over the North Pole into North America and westward into Europe.

Is it from an enhanced greenhouse effect? (that’s a term for what most call global warming)

Is warming actually the cause of the cooling? (it sounds sarcastic, but it’ not, it’s actually a scientific concept). It’s not a new idea, even Callendar was aware before he died, that the observed dropping global temperatures might mean he was wrong. It was a possibility, even as the greenhouse effect increased, that it might cool the planet, rather than warm it. The theory of Maurice Ewing and William L. Donn was fresh and new, and one reason he wasn’t getting much publicity.

But hey, science like that is boring. And let’s face it, the GIGObusters of the world don’t really know that much about weather, climate or science. For example, the fuckheads of the world dismiss, argue, or claim shit like the following is meaningless. (and yet, he will read all of this, unlike the real trolls here)

For example, northern hemisphere winter temperatures from the midfifteenth to the midnineteenth centuries were significantly lower than they are today.

The late nineteenth century represented a period of transition between this cold interval — sometimes known as the Little Ice Age — and the thermal maximum of the 1940’s.

Remember, the climategate emails revealed exactly and with no doubt, that they were conspiring to remove the “blip” of the thermal maximum.

If you look at the attached plot you will see that the land also shows the 1940s blip (as I’m sure you know). So, if we could reduce the ocean blip by, say, 0.15 degC, then this would be significant for the global mean — but we’d still have to explain the land blip. I’ve chosen 0.15 here deliberately. This still leaves an ocean blip, and i think one needs to have some form of ocean blip to explain the land blip (via either some common forcing, or ocean forcing land, or vice versa, or all of these). When you look at other blips, the land blips are 1.5 to 2 times (roughly) the ocean blips — higher sensitivity plus thermal inertia effect
