Here is what I learned when all of my friends left for college, leaving me alone: relying on other people for a sense of fulfillment will lead to feeling lonely and disenfranchised. And here is something I have learned recently: people will generally be friendly is you start the conversation. It’s not fun the first or second time to walk up to someone and say “Listen, I know this sounds lame, but I HATE to eat alone, maybe you like to, I don’t know. But if you hate it, too, could I sit with you?” Trust me, approaching strangers is only hard the first couple of times. You’re not going to meet people and get friends without being proactive. This isn’t like High School where you have your circle of friends you’ve known forever. And lastly, something else I recently discovered: people you don’t know well really don’t think about you as much as you think they do. This means that those people that you are convinced HATE you probably don’t, they probably don’t THINK about you too much. People don’t notice you eating alone in the caf. People don’t keep tabs on your movement on a Saturday night. You’re the only one who does. So give yourself a little slack. You have an amazing opportunity to discover what you are like when you are in a new environment. Discover yourself. Take yourself to movies YOU want to see and sit wherever you want to. Because you’re alone doesn’t mean you don’t have wonderful company within yourself. ---

Wow, thanks everyone! I feel really loved now… :o **TVeblen** , I’m a nerd too! I’m sorta a loner, I’m just mostly upset that my roommate who I’ve been friends with since the sixth grade has left me for another… (cue soap opera music) **Medea’s Child** , I’m not too worried about the papers. I was in honors english in high school and my english 103 professer was quite impressed at my writing abilities. It actualy doing them that sucks. I procrastinate like hell. I have _some_ friends here, but not many. I think I’ll do better next sememester. And I _might_ be transfering to DC next year, but that is so unknown, it’s almost not worth mentioning. **iampunha** , Thanks for the offer! But I tend to finish papers so close to the deadline that I would be sending them to you hours before I needed to turn them in. Hey, now that you’re here, I just wanted to say, You’re definitely on the list of people on the boards I’d like to meet. If I didn’t have my fiance, I’d have a crush on you.
