I’m surprised by how many people are popping in to express their shock/horror/disgust about this thread. C’mon, guys: the old meme that women are attracted to power applies here. Sure, it’s not universal, but there’s something to the idea that a good chunk of the female population is attracted to a powerful, intelligent man. Couple that with the fact that Obama isn’t exactly a bad looking guy and you’ve got a whole bunch of women with a whole bunch of crushes. I really don’t get the disgust though. Let’s see, women can be attracted to someone more or less useless in the world like some actor or singer-- or they can have a crush on brilliant, articulate, powerful guy who has a good shot of being the leader of the free world. Well, hrm. Clearly, I’d choose the worthless singer- but I have terrible taste in men ;). But seriously: I’d do Obama. Eh, the first election of Felipe González as president of Spain was linked (and not jokingly) to his looks; a lot of women polled said they were voting for his party because he was so handsome (doesn’t do anything for me, but the other main candidate looked like a cartoon accountant). I think he only got reelected twice: truly horrible results. Ayup. ---

I think the difference here is that no one (in this thread, at the very least, but also no one I’ve talked to IRL) is voting for Obama because he’s hot. He’s hot because we’re voting for him. That is, the qualities that make him appealing as a candidate - his oratory skills, his baritone voice, his ability to remain calm no matter what and his plans for actually helping Americans instead of sucking us dry - also ping all our Cavemama instincts that go, “Oo! Barack make good provider for babies!” The no body fat and great smile and dreamy brown eyes…_sigh_…those are a nice bonus, but not why _I’m_ voting for him, anyhow. 😉 ---

Right. The fact that he’s absolutely yummy is just a bonus. The real thing that makes him exciting is the possibility of CHANGE! (And the very first picture (you have to go all the way back) on the Yes We Can Hold Babies blog was what made me “fall in crush” with him. And I don’t even like kids very much.) ---

This and all the ‘I’d fuck Palin even though I’m a Dem’ threads are great illustrations of male and female sexuality (and yes yes, broad strokes here). Guys will be attracted to a woman i.e. Palin, Paris Hilton despite her being the scum of the earth. Intelligence, voice, power, etc. make an average man _more_ attractive to women. But that’s just fantasy fodder. ---

The words “Obama” and “Hot” were never joined together in my mind until after I decided that I would vote for him (I supported Hillary). Then all of a sudden, I realized just how really hot he is. And I think it’s definitely something to do with the Cavemama instincts. The only turnoff for me was when I read that he hit on Michelle when she was his mentor at the law firm. I guess he’s grown up now, and McCain’s an adulterer, so he’s still the lesser of two evils. ---

It’s something that sort of worries me about myself. I mean, I agree with him on foreign policy, on the economy, on the environment, on renewable energy, on health care. I more or less agree with him on the war (I don’t think announcing a timetable is a good thing to do, though it may be the only way to get Iraq to hold up their end of the bargain). I disagree with him on a few things, but overall I think he has the intelligence and the instincts and, yes, even the necessary experience to do a good job. I think McCain sold his soul to the Party and I regret that I don’t trust him anymore. But sometimes, deep in my heart, I fear I’m voting for Obama just because he’s an amazing speaker and he makes my stomach go all fluttery. Power and intelligence are sexy. Still, two things calm me down: 1. I know how much a Good Feeling about a person (admiration, love, affection) can make a hideous person beautiful, and Obama ain’t bad looking. 2. I also feel guilty when I go to the local Chinese grocery (Please forgive the white girl! She just wants some pork bao and sesame candy!
