Updike: here is Jill Caroll’s previous situation: She is kidnapped by people who use kidnapping as leverage and publicity for their cause; a US journalist is prime bait and fodder to focus world attention. She is held, thinking every day that she might be beheaded every day for three months. Or , perhaps, simply shot in the head. I cannot imagine waking up every day for three months knowing I might die at any minute. The “unless” factor is to include the abhorrhent impossible most of us, thankfully, will never have to endure. It’s supposed to include something that will never be commonplace, but, unfortunately, we have to sadly include under human duress. At this point, I’m going to bow out until I hear what Jill Carroll has to say in coming days. I’ll be listening to, and appreciating, her experience ---

I don’t know what you think you mean by “their costume,” but “they” don’t _have_ a “costume.” She has expressed no fondness for her captors, just the opposite. If you want to allege “intent” to help her captors, it is your burden to prove it. I realize that you are intellectually challenged but maybe you can get one of the staff workers in your group home to explain “presumption of innocence” to you. Oh,and this may come as a shock to you but headscarf does not equal “terrorist.” Can you stand up to torture, yes or no? ---

You are aware, I’m sure, that not all Iraqis are terrorists, right? Indeed, to listen to the supporters of this war, the entire point is to create a free country for folks who wear head scarves and name their daughters things like “Zaraib”. They are our allies, moron. You are also aware, you weeping pustule on the face of this message board, that it’s a good idea for a journalist to make a connection with her subjects. Both in order to get them to open up to her, and so that she can better understand what she’s writing about. In this case, part of that was aping local culture. And I know that you know, you utter fool, that Iraq is a fucking dangerous place, especially for Western women. Keeping a low profile by dressing and acting Iraqi is just prudent. Not cowardly, not selling out, just a sensible way to not stand out so much so that the bad guys are slightly less likely to notice you, kidnap you, hold you for three months, and force you to make anti-American statements under threat of death. I hope no one you love is ever held hostage. I know that no one you know ever has been, or you wouldn’t be displaying such a hideous lack of empathy. ---

As for changing her name, wasn’t she a reporter undercover? You do know what “undercover” means, right?
