The law recognizes that a person cannot get a new home in moments. If a property owner allows someone else to make use of their property as a home , then the law provides extra protection than if you are ejecting a drunk guest from a party.

I vaguely recall some case from a decade or two ago where a couple in NY had to go to court to get their adult son out of their house.

I assume the short answer is - it depends on the state or country.
