[Cracked article as inspiration](http://www.cracked.com/blog/4-relationship-arguments-you-wont-see-coming/) On those rare occasions that I have found myself in one, no, I didn’t-not sure what the point would be, much less when you would have the opportunity. [Vacations and other forced but temporary separations are yes a different matter, mind] But other folks’ mileage (and sex drives) may vary. In my twenties I did, in my thirties on occassion after that only if I was going without for some reason. In my first marriage the wife liked sex everyday but only on weeknds would I have a chance of getting it twice in the same day. I would very often rub one off at some point before bed time. Now I am in my late 60’s and if for some reason I go 5 days without sex I might rub one off. I start thinking about it after 3 days. ---

For sure. Age, and a little complaint that’s TMI for anyone but my urologist, have changed matters somewhat, but otherwise I was never in a regular-sex relationship where she wanted it as often as I did. I can certainly imagine being in a relationship where I’d never feel the need, but I can also imagine being a multi-millionaire with a private yacht moored in the South of France. ---

Yes. I’ve never been in a relationship where both our sex drives were so perfectly aligned that masturbation was not a normal option, and this goes for both of us. And even when sex drives were perfectly aligned for periods of time, sometimes your partner is not available or you just want to quickly take care of your urge without disrupting the day. ---

I know a nice couple, where the wife caught the husband wanking in the shower. She was actually angry, and demanded that he reserve sex only for her. My view is that of the majority here so far: he ought to have the right to occasional self-abuse. But…he would appear to need to work harder to satisfy her desires, too. ---

To be honest, I don’t see masturbation and sex as being substitutes for each other. Similar in some ways, but not the same. It’s like steak and a baked potato for dinner. We may all agree that the steak is the better part of the meal, but most of us are happier with both. ---

Masturbation is normal, whether one is in a sexual relationship or not. But a good encounter with a partner makes solo masturbation seem about as sexy as a sneeze. YMMV. ---

My ex was furious when she caught me masturbating a couple of times over 20 years. Completely furious. She even mentioned this to our marriage counselor. “I caught him masturbating to porn in the basement!” Like it’s the end of the world. If I caught her I would have joined in. What a dipshit. ---
