Dougie: The play can happen more than once in one “half” an inning. But, if you think about it, you know it’s almost impossible for a pitcher to have five strike outs in one inning. Think of what would have to happen on the field. And that’s why it’s never happened in the jillion games they’ve played througout history.
Why pull the pitcher? He’s getting the strikeouts! Pull the catcher! He’s the idiot that can’t catch the ball. The reason you won’t more than four strikeouts in a pro ball game is because these guys are the best ball players in the US (uh… and Cuba?). If I had one thing to say about all my years of sports officiating it’s that your biggest test of rules knowledge is going to happen in the younger age groups, not your older, skilled ones. What’s that mean? Well, if you want to see a pitcher throw eight or nine strikeouts in an inning?.. go to a 10&under game, not a pro game.
Good point, Enright. But, in one specific instance, don’t blame Mickey Owen…blame Hugh Casey, whose pitch that Mickey dropped was apparently a spitter. (At this time Mickey Owen was, during the regular season, enjoying a long errorless streak.)
Speaking as one who has scored hundreds of games at the amateur level, I contend that you are incorrect Monty.
A strikeout can be recorded even when it is followed by either a passed ball, wild pitch, or catcher error and without regard as to whether or not and out is acheived.
At the amateur level I have witnessed as many as 5 strikeouts in a single half-inning.
Technically, the OP is correct, although it is not realistic that you’d see 1,437 strikeouts in the same half inning.
I’d also like to confirm that the batter can’t advance to first base on a third strike if it is occupied with less than two outs.
So you see Monty, a strikeout is a strikeout…not necessarily and out…
Geez, Krisp. You don’t read the whole thread befodre laying into me? It’s already been pointed out that there’s a difference between an Out & a Strikeout, & I, unlike you, had the courtesy to read those responses.
Do the world a favour and either (a) pull your head out of your ass, or (b) cram it up your ass some more!
I didn’t write that you had none. I wrote that you displayed ill ones in your post. I wrote that your behavior (in that particular post) was inappropriate for the MPSIMS forum. Do you disagree?
(D) Since those posts were there for all the world to see, you either
(1) Didn’t bother to read the whole thread before shooting your mouth off, or
(2) Did read the whole thread and still posted,
Either one of which thus displayed
(a) Your incredible crassness, &
(b) That you took a shot at me for no other reason than…well, for no reason.
I believe my response to you was very well appropriate given the above and as the affront was in this thread, the response is perfectly fit to be in it also.
I quoted your post because it came off as quite authoritative and was concluded quite smugly. Your “nice try though” comment was particularly crass. Seeing as how you now admit to having little knowledge or experience with baseball, one would have to wonder why you’d have been so condenscending with the “nice try though” comment.
The real problem is your massive ego combined with your extreme dislike of me which caused your heartburn with being corrected by me on the facts in public. This is probably the cause of your insulting comments to me.
I must confess though that I did take a certain perverse thrill in correcting a know-it-all.
