In case you were wondering, Lyft sucks

Do you have a service like this near you? http://driversonscoot.com.au/

Drive to the bar, have them drive you and your car home.

As far as Uber goes, I’ve never used it but I haven’t had the need to use a Cab since Uber made an appearance round here. I generally get good service with taxis, I have a cab rank walking distance from my home, I’m happy to stick with them at the moment.

Three times moderators have told people, in this topic, to stop the hostile remarks to others and take them to the Pit.

This is a warning for you for ignoring mod instruction.

Neither is available in my area but I have used Uber when travelling and had read a bit about Lyft. I’ve added the app to my phone just in case I end up somewhere with Lyft service available but no Uber but based on this review I think I’ll keep my current order of preference.

Thanks MOL!

I’ve used Uber and liked it, but I’m a bit worried about the recent news about the head guy being creepy and basically feeling that he can use passenger data anyway he wants.

Is Lyft better on the privacy front?

I’m sure something similar is available here in Chicago, though I never looked into it. Such things existed back in Los Angeles and Minneapolis. But the idea of driving to the bar never really occurred to me anyway. My MO has always been walk or have someone else drive you, whether it’s a taxi or one of your sucker friends who doesn’t drink.

OK, having never used a ride share service but have used cabs and shuttles, let me see if I have this straight.

Cabs are owned by companies and the drivers have a special kind of license.

Ride share services are individuals using their private cars to give people rides and no special license it needed.

Am I close?

I think so.

yes.

that’s the “controversy.” In Michigan, I read the law as saying a Chauffeur license is required if you’re operating a vehicle for the express purpose of transporting other people around. I don’t think it’s been put to the legal test yet.

For “snippy”?

FWIW, I prefer Lyft. I haven’t had any problems with the app letting me know how close the driver is. Both apps are generally bad about their ETAs. And fare quotes don’t bother me because they’re pretty much always cheaper than Uber and certainly not much different. I’d use them all the time if they had more drivers. But mostly I like the vibe of Lyft. It’s more like catching a ride with a cool neighbor. Uber tends to be just business, and a business run by soulless tech bro douchebags, at that (and I’m in tech).

I loved the moustache. The moustache was great. It’s the one reason I decided that should I have to try one of these apps, I would try Lyft first. And also because I read about the strong-arm tactics Uber was using against Lyft.

Zombie alert…

I have to say, three years later that last line literally made me laugh out loud. Really, this whole post reads like a “wtf do I need with an information superhighway” rant from 1994.

I’ve used Lyft half a dozen times, and so far it’s been great. They haven’t misestimated times for me. I stay away from Uber because of the sexual harassment thing. I guess the worst offenders are gone from the company now, but still.

In any case, remember that competition is good for consumers. Lyft forces Uber to stay sharp. You should be thanking us Lyft supporters instead of dunning us as abnormal!

I’m also confused by Gatopescado. I have a car too, but sometimes I’m go places where it’s inconvenient to bring it. I hate checking luggage, and it simply won’t fit in these new, tiny overhead compartments. I think he may be cat fishing us. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well a lot has changed since the OP was written over three years ago. For instance I have used Uber many times now but still haven’t used Lyft. Any comparisons about the two aps from back then are no longer valid since things have changed so much. Also, a huge number of drivers use both services now so the drivers and the cars are now largely identical.

Several years later … I have used both Uber and Lyft and I have had none of the problems that the OP complains of when using Lyft.

In fact I prefer it to Uber, because Uber is a such a slimeball company.

Someone gave me a free-ride credit for Lyft – I think it was Lyft, but I suppose it could be Uber – but I have yet to use it. We just use regular taxis still. Is the point of Lyft and Uber that you can pay with the app? Or are there markets where regular taxis are truly terrible? I prefer paying cash to taxis, and The Cab here in Honolulu has always provided fantastic and quick service. Never understood the appeal of these other services.

The primary thing is price. Uber and Lyft are usually much cheaper than an equivalent ride in a taxi. The other is convenience - you do everything through the app. I’ve rarely had to wait more than a few minutes for a car and you can track where they are as they’re coming to pick you up.

Yeah, like to Bogota? I also have my “own damn car,” (two, in fact, though I can’t claim to be a “normal person”). Uber is great in Colombia, (even though it’s technically illegal). It’s even cheaper than the already cheap taxis.

Yeah, we’ve switched to Lyft here. Nothing but great service. As I’ve said before, I’d use them over taxis even if the price was higher. The experience is far superior.

Yes, where I live the regular taxis are truly terrible. If you call for one, it might come in an hour. Or it might not. If it does come, it will certainly be disgustingly dirty.

Whereas Uber never takes more than ten minutes, and is always clean.
