In general, what should I bring for a hospital stay?

Nail clipper
Q-tips
Stuff for cleaning your glasses
Book of short stories

Best of luck, Frank. Please let us know how it turns out.

Best wishes. I hope you’re able to give us updates from the hospital.

I’ve been through cancer and some other ugly stuff, and my best advice is to take it one day at a time.

Best of luck, Frank.

What about relaxation/meditation recordings, or whatever music relaxes or inspires you? If you are stressed out and worried and can’t sleep, they can help tremendously.

Ditto on the earplugs and sleep mask and light reading. Pen and notebook and mini flashlight, in case you you think of things in the night that you want to remember, like questions to ask your doctors, or things to tell people, or insightful thoughts and feelings.

Something that makes you laugh. Whether it’s downloads of comedies, silly books, cartoon collections, or whatever…hospital and treatments are stressful, and everything gets too serious sometimes. Laughter releases a whole boatload of tension. Your sense of humor and what you find funny may be changing, too, so bring or have someone bring you a variety of humorous material.

I like to take a cheap LED headlamp with a few brightness settings so I can read novels in bed without having the large overhead bedlamp on keeping others awake.

Aren’t most hospitals now mainly private rooms?

Not in my experience. There are quite a few shared rooms out there.

Go ahead and bring your laptop or a tablet. Being stuck in the hospital indefinitely without the Internet is awful.

Good luck and update us if you can.

American hospitals are.

If you’re not going to be in bed all the time, a dressing gown of some sort might be good for when you’re in a chair.

Don’t think I saw a bathrobe on the list. Nice to have when you go for walks around the unit and want to cover up.

If you value your butt, bring good toilet paper from home.

Even in oncology units, there are a lot of semiprivate rooms. It seems to be a function of how old the building is vs demand for space.

I’m out, but no real news. They performed a bunch of tests, and I have to wait for results. (Probably quickly.)

It was a private room, and was peaceful at night.

I know you are out now, but wanted to say good luck and that my thoughts are with you.

Just in case you end up back in the hospital, I wanted to mention my experience. If you have insurance, check with them on what they will pay for.
I spent several months in the hospital back in 2002. If I needed tissues, they would bring me one of those travel packages of tissues. Razors always came with a razor and a travel can of shaving cream, as did shampoo etc.
What I didn’t know was that my insurance classified razors, shampoo, tissues etc, as “convenience items” and did not cover them, so I ended up paying out of pocket for them. The kicker was that the hospital charged $10 for each “convenience pack” they brought in…so I paid $10 for a travel pack of tissues!

As stated before, request an itemized bill and check it closely. They billed me for things that I never used or could have used, one that sticks out plainly was tampons, (I’m a guy). I know tampons can be used for things other than the obvious, but they never used them on me.

Have you thoroughly checked?

Just saw this thread.

Best of luck Frank. I hope the test results are as good as they could possibly be.

I hope you’re doing well, Frank.

I have lung cancer that has spread to the liver. I’ve an appointment on Monday to discuss details and treatment options.

Very sorry to hear that :frowning: Best of luck beating this disease.

I’m very sorry to hear that. My fingers are firmly crossed for you.

Fuck. :frowning:

Damn. I hope treatment gives you the best results.
