"In God We Trust" required in all Louisiana Classrooms

Yes, it would easily make my Top 1000.

I agree. Maybe not #1 on the list but it is definitely on the top 1000 list.

How bad does it have to get before you think we should start giving a shit?
My guess is between “Too late for it to matter” and “Not at all, because your opinion just doesn’t matter”.

E pluribus anus

Oh, me too. I was completely serious. Assuming your kid is old enough to understand that kind of language, you should absolutely shoot straight with them about this sort of thing.

And this is why it’s important that your children understand the world and how it works. This sort of behavior is a symptop of the societal trends that lead to discrimination against religious minorities. If you and your kids live in a place where you might be persecuted for your religious beliefs (or lack thereof), your kids should be aware of that reality (to the extent appropriate based on their age and the level of persecution).

Is Louisiana that bad yet? Probably not, but this is absolutely a step in the wrong direction.

Which God?

I didn’t think you were. I lived in the old days too. I didn’t stop saying the pledge until jr. high school, but didn’t really care either. I’d much rather have the schools teaching the facts on subjects like evolution if it was a choice between that and getting rid of the signs and the pledge, but there’s no reason at all to make such a choice, or even to consider these to be difficult things to accomplish. I just hope the SCOTUS doesn’t reverse course on past decisions.

At this point the SC not reversing course on these matters would be a course reversal…

This is why parents should be actively educating their children also. When my daughter’s school was going overboard (IMO) teaching kids that DRUGS ARE BAD, I spent time teaching her about drugs like penicillin, Anesthetic agents, chemotherapeutic drugs, insulin, etc. I taught her that drugs were things that could save lives or take lives and it was the use or misuse that was the concern.

She then shared this information with her classmates and teacher. I was called in to speak with the teacher and I hope I educated her a bit. (She was not amused)

In god We Trust? A great segue into discussions about the atrocities committed in the name of gods. There is educational material available from the Freedom From Religion people, obtain it and use the school’s craziness as a springboard.

Yup. Religion has caused more wars and killed more people than anything. I will give an exception to Krakatoa and Tambora eruptions I suppose, but still, religion has killed more people, both in body, and mind.

You could say that polite fictions make the world go round.

Maybe we could pair it with some “ceremonial atheism” quotes from the founding fathers.

If everyone is equally polite, perhaps. But if one segment is demanding politeness when it comes to their beliefs, but refuses to extend such politeness to the beliefs(or non-beliefs) of others, then there is a definite problem.

Do you mean “quoting out of context” and “being deliberately disruptive”?

Which is different from the arguments in favor of ceremonial deism how?

Actually, I agree with you. My response was supposed to be how the Religious Right would respond.

Got it! :slightly_smiling_face:

And why?

The god of SCotUS approved Ceremonial Deism . . . who (totally by coincidence) is Jesus, the only real god.

This particular theist thanks you for that cool new term, ceremonial atheism. IMHO, and one I’ve posted before on this site, “There is no such thing as ceremonial deism”. You can tell the public doesn’t believe that latter term because of their freaking out about their religious sensibilities being offended when even the idea of removing the religious references is discussed.
