In high school did you have a record that you "wore the grooves out" by playing it over and over?

National Lampoon’s !“Radio Dinner”-I wore that one out!

For me this album was a real eye opener as to what was possible for pop music.
I played that album to near unusable condition.

Beatles Yesterday and Today.

Warren Zevon Excitable Boy (first side much more than the second).

So, so many. But being a bit younger than some of y’all, I didn’t wear out the grooves, I overstretched the cassette tape. With enough play, they got “wobbly” sounding.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Arena (by Duran Duran, which ironically did not contain “Rio”)
Phantom of the Opera
Pretty Hate Machine (Nine Inch Nails)

Also several mix tapes and singles. I think my mom got pretty darnn tired of “Institutionalized” and “Stuart” by senior year.

Simon & Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence

As a teen of the 70s, I wore out several vinyl albums that I later purchased in other formats.

Among them:

Boston
Led Zeppelin II
Yes:*** Fragile ***and Close to the Edge

Dark Side of the Moon. I think I bought 4 copies of that LP over the years before switching to CDs.

I’m embarrassed to admit this but Jessie’s Girl by Rick Springfield.

Tommy and Quadrophenia by The Who. Ive been through 2 vinyl copies of Tommy, and 2 vinyl and one CD of Quadrophenia.

John Mayall “Back to the Roots.” Didn’t actually wear it out, but my sister threatened to break it if I played it again

Limiting it to high school, then Queensryche’s “Operation Mindcrime

Not quite worn out, but I went through several copies of Cornell '77. It is one of the quintessential Dead shows, a great show to listen to over and over and over and over to pick up excruciatingly fine detail–or play for someone who never hear or understood the Dead. Yes, there are others in the pantheon, but this is/was a go-to show for legions of fans. From eaten by hungry tape players to given so people could listen when they could to up and walked away, I went through many copies.

For high school it was War by U2. For college it was Little Creatures by Talking Heads.

The Singles 81→85 by Depeche Mode

ELO - A New World Record (8 Track)
Boston - First Album - 33 1/3" record.

Yep, that would be mine, too. At least that’s the first that comes to mind. I can’t remember listening to any other album as much as that one.

Played my Royal Guardsmen LP so much that it’s not worth listening to now with all the skipping.

ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
Boston’s first album

The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour album, Side 2: every morning before school. “Penny Lane” remains my favorite song.

I was a nerd then, too. This was the late 70’s. Long out of vogue.
