Thank you! I have been trying for years to explain that a fast food burger is a different foodstuff than a restaurant style hamburger. You can’t compare In-N-Out to the restaurant burgers, you have to compare them to McDonalds or Whataburger or other similar places. If you want a fast food style burger, no one does it better than In-N-Out. If you don’t want a fast food style burger, you will find In-N-Out seriously disappointing. It would be like getting yourself all set for a nice piece of deep dish pizza and then getting a thin slice of plain cheese New York style. Sure New York style pizza is great, but if you want Chicago style deep dish you are going to be seriously disappointed.
And yet when I do compare In-N-Out to Whataburger, I find it wanting.
Okay, that’s not really fair, I haven’t had an In-N-Out burger in a few years and I should probably give it another go before I slag on it again. Even so, I find it to be way, way overhyped. It baffles me that there’s consistently huge lines at In-N-Out that you just don’t see at other fast food restaurants. It’s just a burger.
Taking everything I said in my last post into account…Fatburger. Always Fatburger. Mostly because you can get it with an egg, but also because it’s just that kick ass.
I stay away from Tommy’s these days. Their chili’s addictive properties are more than I can take. The last time I ate there I was going through chili withdrawals for 2 weeks. I was dreaming about the stuff. That can’t be healthy.
edit
It’s been too long since I has a Whataburger to have a good response. I remember loving it, but I mostly ate there at 3am, and the last time I was in Whataburger country was 8 years ago…so, it’s hard to say.
The lines are mostly due to the time it takes them to make your food to order, not just the general awesomeness of the food. I will agree that it is rarely worth waiting more than about 15 minutes for an In-N-Out burger
Even compared to Burger King I found In-N-Out roughly on par. Perhaps I was just expecting more from it after all the near worship of In-N-Out here in SoCal.
Really? Well, YMMV, and all that. To me, In-N-Out and BK are worlds apart (also, of the major 3 chains, BK is my least favorite.) The meat on an In-N-Out burger is just so much tastier and beefier. It’s pure beef goodness. BK tastes to me like its been dipped in kerosene or something. The closest fast food analogs to In-N-Out are Five Guys and Whataburger, although I prefer In-N-Out to both. Fatburger, mentioned above, does come really close, too.
The fries should default to crispy. If you want soggy, grease-laden fries, have that on the secret menu! Fatburger Fat Fries for me.
I prefer Fatburger to In-N-Out. Fatburger’s not afraid to put salt and pepper on their patties when they cook them. In-N-Out is good, but I like Fatburger better. I’d kill for a Tommy’s chili burger. None I know of up here, though.
In fact, back in the '80s the In-N-Out bumper stickers were modified to read ‘IN-N-OUT URGE’. They’ve since changed the design of the bumper stickers so that this is no longer so easily accomplished.
