I hope this isn’t off topic, but conservative parents are now going after apps that let you borrow digital books.

I think the question is who got to decide that in the first place. Unless of course, you think there wasn’t politics involved in that process.

That’s an easy one to answer. The owner of the platform. Just like the SDMB right here.

Would you prefer that mods aren’t allowed to moderate not only trolls and such, but spam, porn, and hate speech?

There certainly are politics involved in everything, the definition of politics is: The set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status.

Now, what I think you meant to say was that there was political bias involved, and if that’s the case, then you would actually need to demonstrate that, not just passive aggressively assert it.

Presumably the courts will. But that’s not the point. The point of these laws isn’t to win lawsuits; it’s to force corporations to have to fight lawsuits. Even if they win every decision, they’ll still be overwhelmed by the expenses.

So corporations will just surrender. They’ll allow conservatives to post anything they want rather than try to enforce any standards.

We are not just talking about small corporations here. Once Facebook gets a lawsuit thrown out with prejudice, and countersues, forcing the individual to now defend themself against a giant mega corporation, I think that there will be a chilling effect on future lawsuits.

Wikipedia, OTOH, will probably just go out of business.

I don’t feel that’s how it will play out.

First, a lot of these judges will be appointed by Republicans and will be looking for reasons to issue decisions against Facebook if that’s the Republican agenda.

Second, even if everything goes well for Facebook in these trials, there will still be the legal expenses. There’s no point in suing people to recover lost legal expenses if those people don’t have the assets to pay any awards.

Third, chilling effects only work on people who are willing to think about the consequences of their actions. And the last two years have shown us that the people at the bottom of the conservative base are willing to die if their leaders tell them to do so.

On what basis do you think Facebook could counter-sue? What cause of action?
