Despite being 7 months away, the [senate race is Georgia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_election_in_Georgia,_2014) is already heating up.

On the Democratic side, which is not going to win anyway since this is the deep South, [Michelle Nunn](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Nunn) is comfortably in the lead on a platform of “I’m the daughter of [that guy you elected 20 years ago](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Nunn)”.

The Republican side is much more interesting, in that it’s the side with actual competition and an actual shot of getting elected. The main candidates (as in, the ones anybody has heard of are:

[ul]
[li][Paul Broun](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Broun), a house member.[/li][li][Phil Gingrey](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Gingrey), another house member[/li][li][Jack Kingston](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kingston), yet another house member[/li][li][Karen Handel](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Handel), former GA Secretary of State and failed Governor’s candidate. [/li][li] and finally, David Perdue, former CEO of the economic powerhouse Dollar General and cousin of our last Governor (the one whose water plan was infamously “pray for more rain”, and when that didn’t work “Pray harder”).[/li][/ul]

So far, aside from declaring, I haven’t heard anything out of Broun or Gingrey, although their polling isn’t so bad. Handel is notable for her support of same sex civil unions until the Governor’s race, when she realized Georgia is a socially conservative state :smack:, and flip-flopped, and then got tagged with the “flip-flopper” label. She still did surprisingly well in the election, forcing the primary to a runoff and then losing the runoff by less than half a percent. She’s also had a door-to-door campaign going (which did not seem to have a good response for “I don’t support conservatives” when they asked “Can we get your support for the most conservative candidate in the race?”).

But the real meaty part of the election is the ad campaign, currently in the foreground with Jack Kingston’s ads about [he still drives](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di6LEUhT8ns) [an old car](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_xr-3YF6hk), because apparently managing to keep your Oldsmobile going for 20 years is a qualification for Senate (ok, the point is that he doesn’t waste money, but still).

But [the best election ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ofyQ6B-CFg) so far is from David Perdue, which says to me everytime I see it “I have no political experience, but I am willing to make babies cry for an ad”. Which seems to be hitting all the right notes with the “we love babies until they’re born and want education/food/shelter/jobs, then fuck 'em” crowd here in my home state. I don’t know who thought an ad juxtaposing crying babies with a CEO would improve polling, but to my chagrin, that shit works here. 😕

Thoughts? I pretty much always vote in the Republican primary but that’s the only one that’s competitive, but I feel like my vote is going to be even more “that clown vs the other clown” this year.

Kingston is the only one fit for the Senate. He should win after the others make fools of themselves. I live in Georgia, btw.

But this is the GOP so maybe Crazy Paul Broun will win the nomination and provide plenty of laughs for the pundits.

Somebody posted in the SROITD thread that the primary is basically a “who hates Obamacare more?”-off. Troof?

Between Kingston and Handel, it’s definitely a “I hate Obama and Obamacare more!” race. Perdue is going with the “My opponents all suck so vote for me” tack - haven’t heard anything out of him about Obamacare specifically.

They will all claim that.
Georgia has one of the highest uninsured populations in the country and our Governor rejected Medicaid expansion.

That same Governor is up for reelection this fall and is favored to win.

I guess Perdue is worried that not having cast a meaningless repeal vote could hurt him.

The OP left out Tom Price who is currently in the House and is running in the GOP primary.
That makes four open districts but they are all safe Red districts. And if just half the adults eligible for Medicaid voted Dem the Senate seat would turn Blue.
(or did Price decide to sit out?)

According to [Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_election_in_Georgia,_2014), Tom Price is sitting this one out. Don’t blame him, he’s currently on the ways and means committee and the budget committee, which are powerful places for a house member.

Speaking of, I saw another [Kingston ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmhOVz5Ucx4) today that has an Obama impersonator calling Kingston and saying how upset he is that Kingston tried to repeal Obamacare 40 times, and he doesn’t want Kingston in the Senate.

I sorta wonder how that doesn’t fall afoul of some impersonation laws, actually.

1. What impersonation laws?

2. Why would it? It is not any attempt to impersonate deceptively, only comedically, like whoever SNL has doing Obama these days.

I **hope.**

That indeed and alone would both and will and would and should make babies cry. ☹

Of course it will make babies cry and suffer a whole lot more thanwhen we fuck those babies up the ass for our own entirely justified amusement as is our nature – but that will **still** be better than letting the Pubs run **anything**. Paul Broun believes embryology, as well as evolution, is a lie “straight from the pits of hell”. He has called for the President’s impeachment, which, as a member of the Senate, he would have to adjudicate as a member of the jury, and therefore he should not be making pronouncements without hearing any of the impeachment evidence (and has challenged the other candidates to do the same thing).

[You gotta be shit’in me.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Broun)

“… graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens (B.S., Chemistry, 1967) and earned his Doctor of Medicine (1971) from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. His internship was at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon and residency at University Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He then practiced general medicine; starting in 2002 he maintained a practice based solely on house calls.”

There’s a hefty portion of us that can do little but shake our head at the idiots our state sends to congress. I’m sure many will remember Representative Westmoreland, who wanted to put the 10 commandments up in the Congressional chambers, yet could not name all ten commandments. He’s from here too.

[Mr Broun’s district](https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/GA) (the 10th) is surprisingly compact, but is an area of the state best described as “the sticks”.
