Straight male. Opposite gender stereotypes: I love art and poetry. I’m goofy about cats and have several. My car and home repair skills are middling to subpar. I only watch most team sports when my friends are doing so. I like good wine, good cheese and good bread. I avoid conflict and am very slow to anger. I sometimes fret over what to wear. In most respects I care a great deal what other people think. I used to dance the title role in our local ballet. I played piano, clarinet and viola in high school. I’m usually quiet, reserved, and respectful. Correct gender sterotypes: I study and teach kickboxing, submission grappling, and self defense. I like dogs. I’m physically fit and strong. I love all combat sports. I like all beer, good or bad. I swear a lot. I have the appetite of a horse and the stomach of a goat. On the rare occassions when I get mad, I get _really_ mad. I more often than not couldn’t give a shit less about what I wear. In certain respects I couldn’t give a shit less what other people think. I have the housekeeping habits of an adult male grizzly bear. I sang for a hardcore band in college. I’m _usually_ quiet, reserved and respectful. ---

\*\*Gay male. \*\* \*\*Not stereotype. \*\* I follow the NFL, MLB and other pro sports. I watch ESPN regularly, including “First Take” I appreciate how a room should look, but don’t have the talent to put it together. Not into fashion. I get cheap haircuts. i hate cooking. I am not a foodie. I’m not a fan of Broadway. I like classic rock. I love old school muscle cars. \*\*Fit the stereotype - \*\* It’s not the only reason I live in San Francisco, but i do like the “gay mecca” thing. Up until a few years ago, I had a lot of sex with a lot of men I didn’t know. And loved it. I still do, but at 50 something, I’ve slowed down quite a bit. **Safe sex, folks!** And way back in the last century, I drank and did a few other things that are not good for one’s health - often to excess. I love old school disco, without apology or guilt. I like trance and dance music. I like Divas - Cher, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, etc. The list could go on I love campy movies, and often quote from such classics as “Mommie Dearest” and “Valley of the Dolls” ---

Straight female. How I’m like a straight guy: I hate to cook, but I love to grill. My fridge is full of marinating sauces, condiments, soft drinks and beer, and that’s about it. There’s very little real food. Bugs, spiders, and snakes don’t bother me at all. I’ll slap bugs with my bare hands. I love to watch spiders weave webs. I’ll pick up snakes and move them if they bother my girl friends. I don’t care about shoes, but I love functional footwear. The thought of spending $400 on shoes makes me cringe, but I’d do it for a great pair of work boots! I pick clothing for comfort first. I make sure it looks okay only because I know I’ll get grief from friends if I don’t, but I really care mostly about comfort. It only takes me 1/2 hour to get ready in the morning. And most of that is time spent in the shower. ---

Straight male here. I like musicals, and find most sports totally uninteresting. I enjoy gardening. I would usually rather listen than talk, and enjoy drawing out other folks opinions. My best friend in my life has been a female. I usually don’t think with my little brain, but really think sex is more cerebral than physical. A pretty face often looses out to an intelligent conversation. Reading is one of my favorite activities. Sometimes I sit down to piss…and read a bit. I enjoy cooking and even mop the floor sometimes without being asked. On the other hand, I do love my pickup truck… ---

Lesbian here. **Fit my stereotype** I have the kd lang hair, Birkenstocks, and Tina Fey glasses I prefer pant suits to skirts and dresses I have a cat I volunteer at a local LGBT centre I own stacks of books on women writers, poetry, and feminist art I am a huge fan of Jodie Foster, and even forgave her for _Flightplan_ **Not stereotype** ‘Gay disco’ is one of my favourite playlists on my iPod I have never been to a women’s folk festival, nor do I want to I don’t like softball, nor do I follow women’s tennis, basketball or soccer I find ‘The L Word’ painful to watch I like to gay male porn I love watching home makeover shows I find Tim Gunn incredibly sexy ---

Straight man I can sew. Besides sewing Halloween costumes and stuffed animals, I repaired my nieces torn skirt so well I couldn’t find the spot I’d fixed. I adore babies and small children. I have zero interest in professional sports. I enjoy antiques, especially antique shopping with my mother. I _love_ the song It’s Raining Men. If women didn’t awaken this insatiable, primal hunger in me, I’d question my heterosexuality. ---

Well almost. I do happen to like women’s soccer. I love Tim Gunn. And Anderson Cooper. (Actually, I make a pretty good fag hag, except I think that’s supposed to be the purview of conflicted straight ladies, isn’t it?) Also in the not-stereotype category: The other day our gay neighbors came to borrow our electric sander. Except, I didn’t know we had an electric sander until my partner pointed out that, yes we do. I’m not sure what’s more wrong with this story – the fact that I completely failed the lesbian test by not remembering that we have a particular power tool, or that our gay neighbors wanted to use said power tool. ---

Straight Female (very stubborn) annoys her Girly Mom (very stubborn): –blunt direct style –really good at math and wince at my BF’s completed calculus homework (he’s trying to finish his degree) –often don’t ‘get’ people which is why I: –work in software –used to ride a motorcycle –enjoy shooting guns –enjoy ice hockey, both watching and playing –the only shopping I enjoy is for groceries –shoes? kill me now! Anything comfortable and not totally ugly is ok –wear skirts maybe 3x/year, and no makeup –the only pink item in my house is probably in the fridge and needs to be thrown out –snakes are cool! –chocolate? no thanks, help yourself. ---

I’m a straight middle aged female. _Stereotypically girly girl:_ I regularly wear make-up, skirts and nail polish. I like pink. I like cats and bunnies and cute little fluffy things. I don’t like bugs, but I do squish ‘em all by my little ol’ self. I like salads, and the nastiest thing I have ever put in my mouth, ever, was a “Slim-Jim” brand so-called meat stick. I do not fart unless I am quite ill, or have unknowingly ingested a milk product. I was a Liberal Arts major – wait, is that really “girly” if I wasn’t going for an MRS? _Stereotypically guy:_ I’m mechanically inclined (decent shade-tree mechanic), likes auto racing (watching, and I paid tuition by street racing), guns, hockey, rodeo, and reptiles. I hate shopping. I’m not overly fond of chocolate. I cuss like a sailor. I love raw oysters, rare beef, calf fries, tequila and beer. I own and use power tools. Emotional displays annoy me. Flowers are nice outside, but I don’t get why a bundle of dead blossoms inside is supposed to be romantic. When I do fart, I can clear a livestock auction barn. _Stereotypically gay guy:_ I like show tunes and musicals. I use the word “fabulous” far too often. I don’t want to sleep with women.
