Actually–as a Briton I’m quite interested by the premium placed on Peanut Butter and in particular PBJ sandwiches! These items are just not particularly commonplace in Britain. Yes, we have ‘Snickers’ chocolate bars containing peanuts, and salted peanuts from those little KP foil bags. But Peanut Butter, though available, isn’t used any more than, say, Branston Pickle. As for Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches, if you want one you’re going to have to make it yourself–I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on sale as is over here! ---

I have no idea what Branston Pickle is made from, but I know what it is: delicious. In small quantities. Ahem. It’s a rare thing, but I have to agree with DtC’s point as well. There is a point at which forcing an accomodation is the wrong thing to do. As I stated in the original GD thread, the point at which a non-educational accomodation in a school for one child impacts upon the education of other children, it’s wrong. Because the budget in this school has to accomodate the nurse for allergy boy, the budget cannot accomodate an educational aide. If I were a parent in that school, I’d be pissed as hell – not because my kid couldn’t have her PB&J, but because she didn’t have someone in the classroom who could answer her question when the teacher just didn’t have the time to get to her, or help her learn the difference between capital B and the number 8, or as a kindergartener, help her undo the fasteners on her overalls when she has to go potty in the middle of a book reading that has the teacher occupied. That’s what this kind of thing can lead to. It’s not just about lunch. And that’s why it’s gone too damn far. ---

Clearly the answer lies in converting those of a United States persuasion from peanut butter to the wonders of vegemite or even marmite or promite if you feel like slumming. ---

Vegemite is wonderful on toast, especially if you have a wicked hangover, but it is no substitute for the creamy deliciousness of really good peanut butter combined with raspberry preserves on slices of whole wheat bread. And yes, PB & J’s must be made fresh–I know the Brits like their pub sandwiches but premade PB & J’s are an abomination. I don’t think I’ve had marmite or promite–would one of our UK, NZ, or Oz cousins please explain the differences? ---
