I was quite adamant about not getting another dog after Ember died on Easter, but Ivylad kept “hinting,” printing out lists of AKC dogs from the paper, leaving notes with phone numbers of breeders about, and generally moping around. Well, yesterday, after realizing that he does need another warm body around the house to help take his mind off his back while I’m at work and the kids are at school, I agreed to take a trip down to the no-kill shelter. We park, and he immediately heads into the shelter building. Because I am still trying to act reluctant about this whole thing, I hang back. And that’s when I noticed the cage outside to the left of the door of the building, with the sign “PUPPIES” hanging over it. “Oh, shit,” I think, staring at the three husky/chow mixes tumbling around the cage. “Ivyboy, go get your dad.” Ivylad comes out, and starts cooing like a new mother over her baby. One of the pups was a cocoa color with ice-blue eyes, another was a lighter brown, and the third was a beige color with a white blaze on his face and white paws. They’re all about eight weeks old, and they’ve been at the shelter for a week or so. Ivylad pets them, then goes in to take a quick look at the other dogs. Then he comes out, pulls out the pup with the white blaze on its face, and takes it over to the grass to play with it. Ivyboy and Ivygirl also start playing with it. Realizing I have lost, I trudge inside and pay for the puppy. Included in the price is the first two shots, a dewormer, and a bath. We also got a coupon for a $15 neutering when he’s a bit older. Then I go outside and tell Ivylad, “Happy Father’s Day.” The puppy’s name is Buck. We wore him out yesterday, and this morning, I come out and Ivylad is sleeping on the couch with the puppy laying on his chest. ---

PUPPY! Over the weekend the local animal shelter had an event where they were showing off dogs that need homes, very, very close to my house. Close enough that I could end up there accidentally, just running errands. Fortunately, I’ve been sick, so I stayed home. God knows what could have happened if I’d ended up near puppies. I don’t have the time to be a good dog owner right now. I have to keep telling myself that. I’m single girl who is moving in a couple months and lives in an apartment in a big city and commutes to work. No dogs. A dog deserves better. No dogs. I want a doggie. ---

Oh, I love puppies! But I feel the same way about them that I do about babies. They’re awesome, love 'em, cuddle 'em, and send them home with their parents! Now kittens, they’re easy. ---

And how does one link to pictures? We don’t have a website, although Ivylad does have a digital camera. It was very hard to leave Buck’s brothers, because they were staring at him through the cage while we were hooking up his leash. I swear, they were thinking, “Hey, where are you going?” Plus, one of the left-behind pups shook his head so much from the fleas that he broke blood vessels in his ear. It’s fairly swollen, and the poor guy is probably very uncomfortable. Unfortunately, being a non-profit, the shelter can’t afford to take him to a vet, although the guy hinted we could have him for free since he would need minor surgery. So Ivlyad is going to talk to our vet and see if he would donate some time and help poor Swollen-Ear puppy. Yikes. Ivylad also has to return a blanket…I hope he doesn’t get it in his head to bring home the other pups… ---

Congratulations, and bless you for taking in a pup that needs a home. I know how you feel, though, about being pressured. When our older dog died back in October, my husband wanted another right away and I didn’t. I also pointed out that we still had our other, younger dog, who has health problems and costs us quite a bit in vet bills. I was able to hold him off for all of 2 months :). We are once again a two dog family. ---

Puppy breath! You get to experience puppy breath! I want a puppy too, but we still have 3 dogs and don’t really need 4 again. Plus two of mine are older, and the eldest may not be with us all that much longer. ☹ So I’m waiting. **ivylass** , I think Webshots has free picture space, or Yahoo, or various other spots.
