# In Windows 98, how can I view my IP address?

I am using Windows 98.
I use dial-up via 56k modem for my ISP.
How, and where, do I look to find my IP address number?
I tried right-clicking Network Neighborhood, then system information, but all it says is: “IP Adress assigned by server” :mad:

every time you dial into a DUN connection, your assigned a different IP address for the duration of that connection…
I’ve never looked when connected via a modem, but you could try winipcfg, it may be listed there from the latest DHCP assigned IP address

Well, I’m not sure where to do it in Windows 98 (and having just upgraded to XP, I can’t really look around) but all manner of games played online have a little “Show my IP” button so you can tell whoever you’re playing with where to connect to.
While not a good longterm solution, you could at least find it.

In a DOS window, you can type **ipconfig** , and that’ll give it to you.

Pull up run from the start menu…
Type in **winipcfg**
Hit ok.
There ya go!

FYI - typing “IPCONFIG /ALL” from a DOS prompt works on all versions of windows (95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, don’t know about earlier).

Is there any reason why both web pages linked above gave me one IP address and both winipcfg and ipconfig in dos give me a different one?

It’s more fun if you type as a URL, ‘what is my IP address’ (no quotes) hit return, & look at all the sites that give you your IP address. You don’t even have to click on a link for each site because the summary shows your address…

I Am Not A Technician, but … if the ISP is using a proxy server, then that server is ‘stamping’ your page requests with its own IP addresses (rather than sending the request with your address plastered for any script kiddie to see). The websites listed may be recording the proxy server’s IP address; the proxy server is acting as a third-party in the connection to keep your IP address concealed.
Like I said, I’m not a technician, but this may occur.

Out of curiosity, if it’s the case that the IP address keeps changing then what address (or other identifier) is the SDMB administrator using to track trolls and sock puppets.

ISPs are allocated a number of IP addresses to re-use. Unless they have multiple ISPs, the troll is likely to be using IP addresses from the (limited) range allocated to their ISP. I think most moderators at boards ban IP ranges, not individual addresses.
