In YOUR opinion, when’s the best time to get cataract surgery?

Wishing you a speedy recovery. I’ll likely be getting the same exact surgery in several years so I’m looking forward to reading about your results.

Good luck!

Same! Best wishes, and please provide updates.

I just had my last cataract surgery follow-up and put in the order for new glasses. I’m out of eyes now, so this is at least one thing I can say I am finished with health-wise. Now it’s @vbob’s turn!

I have always been very nearsighted and started wearing glasses at 12 years old. Now I am 62 and can still read the smallest of writing. The bottom of my progressives are uncorrected. I would hate to lose that so I am glad that keeping that is an option. I don’t mind wearing glasses.

Bummer.

Mine was just beginning to be noticeable (4+ months after surgery); luckily I was able to get it dealt with quickly .

He did one eye, then a couple weeks later did the other - at which time he dilated the first eye to check on it. So I was essentially blind. It was fun trying to see my phone enough to order my Lyft home!!

Left eye yesterday, right eye next Monday. I heroically refrained from suggesting to my cataract surgeon that he schedule balancing my third eye so I could get my chakras realigned…
I’ve elected to surgically correct for good close vision, and get new glasses for distance. Just where the breakpoint will fall remains to be seen.
So my sinister eye had laser ablation for minor astigmatism and a “Clareon™IOL +15.5D Øₜ 13.0mm Øᵦ 6.0mm” mono focus lens inserted. T’was itchy overnight, but perfectly comfortable by morning, while still a bit blurry. That’s apparently expected, and should resolve with healing. My right eye has a LOT of astigmatism, which will require a special ‘toric’ lens insert. Then I wait two weeks of healing and get all new eyeglass prescription(s). As of now, a little over 24 hours after surgery, I can drive in daylight [without much reading signs…], read pretty well, and blow up my computer screen enough to find ways to be pedantic about subscripts…

I think I’ve posted this on other vision threads, but I am planning to have cataract surgery in about 5+ years, when I am in my mid-+60’s.

I am very near sighted (-7.5 contact lens prescription). I am not a candidate for Lasik as my corneas are too thin. I also have a history of Alzheimer’s in my family (father, grandfather, etc.) For my dad and grandfather, their cognitive decline began markably in their early 70’s. I realize that doesn’t necessarily mean I am going to get it as well, but I don’t want to be in that position and having to rely on putting contacts in or wearing glasses all day (which gives me headaches) to see fully.

So intend to get the lens replacement surgery (aka cataract surgery) in my mid 60’s. It won’t be covered by insurance, but it’s not that costly to make it prohibitive.

Had the right eye done yesterday. Laser assisted = pricey, but allowed me to have extreme astigmatism corrected partially with laser and partially with new “Clareon™Toric IOL +16.0D Cyl 2.25 Øₜ 13.0mm Øᵦ 6.0mm” mono focus lens inserted. Word on the net was that laser-assisted also tended towards faster healing, so I decided to spring for it - almost $6k for two eyes. Eyedrops for three weeks, then a visit to my regular optometrist to get a formal Rx for new mid-to-distance spectacles. Meanwhile, I’ve knocked the lenses out of a handful of old glasses to get a matched set and cobbled together a temporary ‘get me down these steep stairs alive’ pair. Also meanwhile I’ve jiggered cantilevered monitor mounts for my workstation to bring paired 27" monitors forward to 24" from my face from my previously comfortable 36" and bumped the resolution down for larger print - I’m hoping the need for this will diminish when both eyes have healed, but it’s certainly workable. Haven’t tried driving at night yet, which was one of the major triggers for getting the surgery.

Let us know how it turns out for you!

I personally did a BOGO with my surgeries - I’d hit the maximum out of pocket with my insurance before the end of 2025, so I scheduled my second surgery for December. I could have waited, but hey, free eye surgery!

Initially after my surgery, the halos from oncoming vehicles was very distracting. I focused on the lines on the road a bit more, and let my peripheral vision tell me about the cars.

Congrats, welcome to the club, and good luck!

Update time! I just (15 minutes ago) got home from my YAG procedure for my PCO. Everything went smoothly. We did just the right eye. The left eye has been stable, even though it has a minor PCO. In fact, we now have three stable refraction readings on the left eye, which makes me elidable for a minor lasik “tuneup” to fine tune that eye.

I showed up at 2pm today. They did a quick refraction on both eyes, and measured the pressure in my right eye. Gave me some numbing drops and dilated the right eye. Time passed, waiting for rooms and availability. They verified that my eye was properly dilated, and took me back to the procedure room. Gave me some more numbing drops.

Doctor came in. I was put into position the typical “lean forward and put your chin here and forehead here” machine. They pulled a strap across of the back of my head to hold me stable. I opened my right eye and they put something there, I think, to keep me from blinking. Doctor told me to follow the green circle with my left eye. Then he got started.

For about a minute, there was a series of three beeps and red circles in the machine. Doctor said I would feel a pulsing in the back of my head, but I didn’t feel anything.

And then poof, we were done. They put some more drops in Brimonidine and Difluprednate. Told me to wait 15 minutes, and they checked the pressure in my eye again. All good.

My best friend was waiting for me already, and she gave me a ride home. I could have driving myself since they only did the one eye, but since that wasn’t a given, I had arranged for the ride.

My vision is already a bit better in that eye, and they tell me it should be noticeably better tomorrow. Also, I will likely have an increase in floaters for a week or so.

If anyone has any questions (now, or future readers), feel free to ask.
