A few years ago, my squad was dispatched on a “man down, CPR in progress” call. Upon arrival at the scene, we met with two paramedics (one dispatched with us, the other was in the area). We loaded the patient into the ambulance, and I climbed into the back with both medics, my partner got behind the wheel, and we started hauling ass to the hospital. Partway there, as I’m doing chest compressions, and the medics are working their magic, a cell phone starts going off. It can be a little loud and chaotic in the back of an ambulance, but at a natural lull in the noise, this voice starts singing: “…knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door…” ---

In the early 1980s, when I lived in a college dorm, the guys in the room immediately below us liked to play that several times a day, and sometimes at night, also at ear-splitting volume. I have honestly never heard it anywhere else, before or since. ---

The one saving grace in that whole incident: the kids were so hopped up on sugary cake and punch and so involved in being pirates and lobbing cannonballs (duck pin balls) at each other that not many people noticed the tune. DJs aren’t common at kids’ functions, are they? ---

My husband and I once held a poll among our Facebook friends to find the most inappropriate song for an ice cream truck to play. It had to be not only inappropriate but offensive. We came up with stuff like “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.” ---
