_If You Wanna Be Happy_ by Jimmy Soul

“If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you”

I haven’t personally witnessed this, but I’ve heard of Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love For You” used at a wedding. The lyrics make it abundantly clear that the narrator is an extramarital affair whining about how her married paramour won’t leave his family and run off with her.

Good thing her name wasn’t Veronica.

We’re talking songs that we’ve actually heard at the wedding/reception right?

We’ve done this thread before and it was universally agreed that _If You Wanna Be Happy_, _Love Stinks_ (mentioned above) and CCR’s _Bad Moon Risin’_ would make for surprising song choices but has anyone heard these songs actually played at the ceremony?

The one I’ll cite was for my dippy cousin who was heavily involved with the local fire department and who got married in October of 2001.

Evidently he and about five of his buddies thought it would be a hoot to go the center of the dance floor and loudly sing along with **Because I Got High** (by one-hit wonder band Afroman).

So here they are drunkenly arranged with their arms around their shoulders, raucously singing along, cracking themselves up and having a rip-roaring time while those in attendance exchanged the WTF? glances. We weren’t sure if the song or the reality of it was played out regularly at the fire station.

And then it was collectively shrugged off and we moved along.

The video for “If You See Kay” is on You Tube; MTV played it several times, and my local AOR station did too - and not necessarily between midnight and 6am. 😛 For some reason, I can’t get the link to post, so you’ll have to visit You Tube and check it out yourself.

For me, the ultimate “not appropriate for a wedding” song that gets played a LOT is Extreme’s “More Than Words”. If you REALLY listen to it, it’s a dude telling his g/f that she’s history unless she has sex with him.

I thought it was a little too tacky, but at wedding a few years ago, they played 99 Problems (as in “I’ve got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one” lyrics). The groom tried repeatedly to claim he meant it as a compliment, but the bride was not happy.

Are they still married?

Yes, the guy wasn’t the most conventional romantically inclined of gentlemen, but in his utterly clueless way meant well. It is now a story they plan on telling their kids, alongside tales of why Daddy is not allowed to buy Christmas presents at the gun store.

Aww isn’t that _Time of Your Life_ song great for graduation? You look back at all the fond memories of high school!

…Except that the song is actually called _Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)_ and is about a breakup. At a graduation, it doesn’t exactly say “fuck this school,” but it’s not as maudlin as people think.

Years back I was at a wedding where the groom insisted they play “Only Time Will Tell” by Asia. [Here is the song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lza2H-fj5Es) and [HERE](http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/asia/onlytimewilltell.html) are the lyrics. WTF?😕

_All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You_ - Heart
Classic operatic tune, and I’m certain most of the guest will know _most_ of the words. 😃

Extra points if the bride requests it.

I was at a bat mitzvah and heard Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You.” I was one of the kid-guests, but I distinctly remember wondering if anyone realized that it’s not appropriate.

Later on, I was at a bar mitzvah, and while we were all seated at the tables, pre-party, the DJ played “Mrs. Robinson.” I remember thinking that the Jesus-related lyrics were similarly inappropriate, and I noticed one of the adults walking up and saying something to the DJ. I’m pretty sure that was the topic of conversation.

34 posts and no one’s mentioned Billy Idol’s _White Wedding_? I’ve heard that clueless brides the nation over ask for that one.

We played plenty of weddings back in the day. For one, the request we received was “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas. It was “their” song.

Sheesh.
