Not quite. I said it annoys me that you will never have to face this threat to YOUR life, while Maureen and many of us here very well could. It annoys me that the Vatican, a group of celibate men, who will most likely never even have a pregnant SO facing this, presume to take control over our lives.

But in this country, every person, male and female, that is entitled to vote has an equal voice in deciding the law. And of course I should point out that in general, the priests that make up “the Vatican” have no vote at all.
So it’s not the priests, or the Church. They have a First Amendment right to offer persuasive political speech, just as you do. But the laws are made by people elected to their offices by majority vote.
You’re complaining about the Church - the Vatican - “deciding your fate”. Yet they have no legislators, no votes, no guns, no army. All they have is a voice, and if your case is more persuasive than theirs, make it.
From the news stories I’ve read over the years, they just pressure the woman involved to get an abortion and shut up about it.

Well, that wasn’t QUITE how I meant it, Bricker. But the fact is, I do get a little steamed when I see men taking a very strident stance against abortion, since it’s nothing something they personally will have to experience. At least not directly, themselves. Their loved ones, yes.

To be fair, a lot of priests in Latin America risked their lives for the people and were truly good individuals, who were persecuted by the right wing death squads. Like Oscar Romero. (I believe GIGObuster once mentioned that his father was friends with the latter).

Do you know of any preists who are raping nuns in Latin America? How about Catholic clegry impregnanting women and pressuring them into getting (illegal) abortions? Just curious, as I have an aunt and a cousin who are Catholic clergy in missionary orders and have never heard anything about this. It seems my aunt at least, would not put so much effort into getting back to Brazil every other year if she were getting raped there.

Perhaps she got lucky, or isn’t as attractive as the others. Or perhaps she’s just decided to ignore any and all reports against the church, and keep silent about what she’s heard; it happened with the molestors.
Romero certainly wasn’t-he was assassinated by the military. As were many others. Not ALL of them were removed. And the Vatican DID launch protests against the government.
