Speaking of which, why does anybody choose to bicker with **Rand Rover**? He’s not making an argument. He’s making up a position so he can disagree with someone he wants to disagree with. You won’t get anywhere with a counterargument because there’s no argument. If you’re a true Randian, you simply negotiate until the Holy Contract is a perfect reflection of your values and ideals. In the unlikely event that you are unable to secure such a contract from a given employer, you simply square your jaw and stride confidently onward to the next opportunity, secure in the knowledge that your superior skills and abilities will prevail and allow you to dictate your work terms to the world. Only weaklings enter into suboptimal contracts. ---

But nobody wants to work without a kill fee. You very rarely have literally “no choice” in the matter, but pragmatism and getting the check will often trump what you feel you’re worth and deserve. Sometimes it’s worth it to stick to your guns, sometimes you gotta compromise. Look, I understand where you’re coming from. You’re saying, suck it up, you knew it was a possibility, so don’t complain when that possibility becomes a reality, right? But sometimes folks just want to blow off a little steam. ---

You think that’s what I’m recommending? Look, I think your response isemblematic of many people’s focus on what is and disregard for what could be. They see poor little Twickster without a kill fee and ignore the fact that Twickster simply made a business deal that didn’t include a kill fee. She is not forced to work without a kill fee–she could find a patch of pavement and lay there until she died if that’s what she wants to do. Instead, she chose to work without a kill fee and now wants to hitch about it. ---
