These threads are always so weird. Male and female Dopers fighting sexism with sexism and you all end up looking like bitter losers. And the hilarious part is seeing everyone try to be sneaky with words and couch it as “some women” or “some men.” The gender wars are still raging, and the sexbots will never change that. ---

What blows me away (snrkk, mmph) is the whole “conversation” ability of this doll. The report says she’ll “chat with you for hours about your interests.” Huh? How? It seems like the doll will say more than “That’s interesting. Go on.” but still. What does it do? Just quote from Wikipedia for whatever topic you broach? Will it laugh at your jokes? Does it argue with you? ---

Honestly, I see that as nothing more than a reflection of the fact that we’ve got criminal penalties for doing so. Rather severe ones, in fact. Doesn’t actually stop everyone from doing it, but that and the taboo of doing so combine to make it more rare than it would be in a more socially approved situation. Of course, any progress on the front of your genetically engineered catgirls will depend on us **finally** getting our ducks in a row regarding consent. Who or what do we require consent from (dildoes? animals? corpses? the brain damaged?) and how do we define consent for those enteties we do require consent from. ---

A guy who would be satisfied with a sexbot isn’t the sort that most women would want anyway, and probably doesn’t have much success anyway. I see getting a sexbot if you weigh 400 pounds, have no teeth, and haven’t bathed since Christmas, but those kinds of people probably don’t have a lot of dates anyway. OTOH, a woman who can be out-competed by a sexbot isn’t that much in demand either. At some point the sexbots will be indistinguishable from people, at which point it becomes merely a question of prostitution.
