Yeah, the writing style is nothing like his. The repeated use of “stupidity” and it variations (which is not characteristic of him). Long, clause-heavy sentences. The use of “Latina” instead of “Mexican.” **Incubus** is a poser, but a transparent one. I don’t think he could fake that post. ---

I think she would prefer Hot Latina Wife instead of Hot Mexican Wife. I hate to say but I sort of feel bad for Incubus after re-reading that post. ---

I guess we’ll all have to agree to disagree then. I think the psychology behind this is much like that of urban legends… in those instances, people intentionally pass on information they know to be questionable because it proves how much smarter they are than those getting duped. IE: Well, sure, that whole ‘Neiman Marcus cookie scam’ _could_ be false, but I’m passing this along as a warning because 1.) big corporations are evil and try to pull stunts like this on the little guy all the time, and 2.) I’m too smart to fall for something so dumb. In this instance, I think we’re all so frustrated and annoyed by his change in behavior that this _needs_ to be true because then he’ll at least be actually suffering some real-world consequences for being an asshole to everyone here. So, although I’d like for that to be true (and as an extension, he grow the hell up some), I just don’t think it is. Further, I think people that we really don’t know (or, in the case of some serial killers where the spouse was totally clueless, that you do), are totally capable of faking lots of things. That’s why the internet and TV (“Catfish” anyone?) is rife with years and years long hoaxes. I’ve also read over a decade’a worth of his posts, and if you’d have asked me two years if he was capable of what he’s doing now, I’d have said no. But the crux there is that, in reality, I don’t really know him. Finally, I think the reason this would be a good ruse (on top of everything else) to perpetuate is because, in his estimation, people pay a hell of a lot more attention to him then reality will bear out. As such, since he’s talked about her ad nauseum all over the board all the time, he felt it would be some sort of admission if defeat or failure if he brought up a split too. So now, he has people in this thread talking about how awesome she is, discussing whether she’s real, possibly feeling a bit sorry for him due to what she’s explained, etc. This way, IF people buy it, he may look temporarily bad, but it proves that he still has a HMW who is educated and high-earning and badass, not ever going to own up to anything on his own, and still let’s him off the hook about those pesky child abuse allegations that just. won’t. go. away. And most importantly, he’s not just like everyone else and he isn’t responsible for anything but his hard work, yadda, yadda, yadda. Oh, and one last thing: if you look through many of his old threads, you see a theme with his exes. Seems like he couldn’t get over them very well. If I’m correct about all this, it would just be another example in a long line of examples where, once broken up, he goes on and on (and on and on) about his former squeezes. Mrs. HMW ™ fits that MO to a T. ---

**Manda Jo** is dead-on. If **Incubus** was an **umkay** level fraudster, he would have flamed out years ago. **Incubus** can be a “non-douchey” poster when he wants to be. Even when he does the whole “my Mexican wife and I were talking about this fill in the incredibly petty thing the other day” act, he comes across more like a clueless moron than a malicious troll. And you’d think that if he were always in character, he’d be doing a better job defending himself in this thread. He’s been downright tame. He’s tried to insult me in the past. The most memorable time was [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=17432917&postcount=59), when he tried to hold me up as a shameful loser compared to his glowing magnificence. But it was so lame that even he must known it when he clicked “submit reply”. He didn’t even bother responding to me afterwards, because he knew he only had empty posturing to support him. And I think deep down, he respects me (for some strange reason). A real troll would given me more of a fight, because trolls don’t care about how they are perceived. I know of at least one occasion when he went to another message board and posted a “That Incubus sure is demolishing that Monstro LOL!” type of post. And everyone saw right through it. Would a serious troll really care that much? I don’t think so. ---

Not all trolls are created equal, ya know. And now I’m sorry to have brought up Umkay. I wasn’t trying to compare them at all, just use hir as a jumping off point that, despite appearances and knowledge, anyone can be the opposite of what they appear. ---

I believe that was his wife. The style is too different, the things she said are just different enough from what he would have said if trying to pose. If he were socking to try to recover his image, he wouldn’t have been quite so harsh on himself in it - maybe a few comments about lying and being a jerk, but not the full rake-over-the-coals treatment he got. It also doesn’t surprise me that the niece wasn’t mentioned. As others hypothesized, maybe that was never true, or maybe wife didn’t read that. And even if she did, seeing what he was saying online about himself and “fatties” is a HUGE blow to their relationship, and I’m sure she has more immediate things on her mind. But what I really wanted to say is this: I’m guessing Incubus is reading the thread now or will at some point. So to **Incubus** , take heart: I was calling you a jerk along with the rest of the board, but I don’t see an innate jerkiness in you. I see a young guy who struggled a little with finding his place in life, and then when things started to improve, got a bit cocky. OK, a lot cocky. You worked to improve things and when you got lucky and things actually did improve, you convinced yourself it was solely due to your hard work, ignoring the big factors of luck and a relatively privileged background. A lot of us went through the same thing in our younger years - we turn into dicks for a while, thinking we have it all figured out. Fortunately, it’s a brief detour before we get ourselves grounded again. You sound like you have a wife with her head screwed on straight, so follow her lead and you can do the same. Quit bashing others, quit throwing out bullshit like “learned helplessness”. Your wife is a social worker; I bet she understands compassion for those less fortunate, and understands that talking shit about others in no way elevates you. ---
