Yes, I understand that not every single indian is engaged in these acts. I understand that thsis does not make all indians evil. I also realize that other people harm the environment. For Christ’s sake, when did I say otherwise?

Because, KRISPY, we are not. every year the fuel is cleaner, the cars emit less pollutants, and more & more areas have smog controls. The laws apply to everyone. Drivng/roads BENEFIT all, also. An Amerind tribe who wastefully wipes out a species is evil, treaty or no. Well, not to put words in Mr. Zambezi’s mouth, but I think it’s probably the hypocricy he found striking. (And the thread title is an ironic riff on that hypocricy.)
We are always hearing that Native Americans worship and cherish nature. Native American groups tend to promote this image themselves. So when you see the sort of practice Mr. Zambezi described, the hypocricy just jumps right out at you. Gosh, you expect us evil European types to ravage the environment, but Indians???
Obviously, at least some tribes are “talking the talk” but they aren’t “walking the walk” on environmental issues.
Just proves we’ve all been fed a line of propaganda. Native Americans are just like the rest of us, no better and no worse. It would be nice if we could all just admit that and move on. Let’s all try to do our bit to better the environment, shall we?

No one has been saying that it’s okay for Native Americans to wipe out a species. First of all, you have no proof that they are intentionally wiping out the fish. Secondly, you’re primarily singling them out not because of their behavior, but because of their ethnicity. That is racism, point blank. Out of the list of people it’s PC to slander, every group was defined by behavior or actions, except white guys, and believe me, no one hates white guys because they’re white, they hate them because in the past thousand years or so, they’ve been the oppressors. Before, it wsa the Romans in Europe, and in Asia it was the Chinese. You’re white, you don’t have to contend with anyhting resembling the problems of other minority groups in America, so it’s just ludicrous for you to criticize them, especially for things that whites are just as guilty of.

Your OP had nothing to do with what this last post said, it indicated that you think the NAs are singlehandedly destroying the environment. If that wasn’t what you meant, then that isn’t what you should have said. If you didn’t want all the flack you have gotten in this thread, then you should have worded your post differently.

If you want to say “such and such tribe is doing serious harm to the environment through their fishing methods and wastefullness” then I would have no problem with it. You don’t like us making blanket statements about you and your race/gender, then don’t do it about others. That is really the only problem I ever had with your OP.
I am not trying to tell you what you meant by your OP. I am trying to tell you how it is being interpreted due to the wording you used. If you had been specific about what tribe you were talking about, and/or backed up your claim that all NAs are destroying the environment then I don’t think anyone, least of all I, would have disagreed so strongly. Of course, we all have the expectation that Native Americans will automatically nurture and cherish the environment, because that’s what the publicity has led us to believe.
When we see something that belies this image (such as the gill netting described in the OP), it is a shock to the senses. It runs completely contrary to our expectations. Do you not get that?
