Well it would be real lousy if he needed Cap while in LA and the phone was in NY…
Emergency by defination means sudden.

> I know how he _got_ Cap’s cell phone, but I’m confused why he carried it on his person seemingly at all times. Even when confronted with a doomsday scenario, he was reluctant to use it, and had to be convinced by Banner. Even then he found it distasteful (he gave out a “pshht” sound). If he didn’t want to use it in an end of the world scenario, it doesn’t make sense he would carry it on him when he never predicted an end of the world scenario.

Part of him knew it was extrememly likely that he should, at some point, call Cap. Part of him realizes he also really likes and respects Cap, and he regretted the rift.
Most of him, though, is a near-total egomaniac\* who had to be forced into doing it by the most extreme circumstances. It’s really hard for him to admit he needs help at all, much less from Cap, whom he respects, but also resents.

\*Seriously. He’s got a good heart, and good intentions, but if his ego were a power supply, he’d be able to light whole suns.

That’s like a four minute trip for Iron Man, and no way he could expect Cap to respond that quickly.

Right, and that’s my point. He would have fought long and hard before summoning Captain America. I don’t see how his character, as it has been developed, would have a need, and certainly no desire, to summon Cap immediately, that he would carry the phone on him at all times, especially since he had to know the response time would not be immediate. It would have been more of a long term solution, not an immediate one where carrying the phone on him would have had a benefit.

Because Tony has trust issues \*and \*abandonment issues \*and \*daddy issues (Cap, after all, was a friend of his father’s). My guess is that he held onto the phone more as a memento or a talisman than as a practical means of communications - it reminded him how much he was angry at Steve, but at the same time, he had to keep it on him or else Cap wouldn’t come back.

Good points.

I would love to see the Watcher show us a “What If…?” image of Thanos’s reaction if they had succeeded. Dude is so freaking cocky, that would have been fun.

As an aside: About Thanos’ claim that Gamora’s world is now utopian. Does anyone else suspect that he’s never actually checked back up on them, and is just so certain that he’s right that he doesn’t need to confirm? And so he’s completely unaware that in the following months, another 45% of the population died from the effects of the collapse of the planet’s social and economic systems?

I think that’s a good bet. There’s been lots of people complaining about how Thanos’ plan makes no sense, how population dynamics would leave us with the same problem in no time at all, and so on, but that’s the point—dude’s stark raving mad! This isn’t the plan of somebody who has carefully reasoned out the consequences and chosen the necessary evil—although that’s of course what he tells himself, painting a picture of the only one willing to do what’s necessary, which just underscores the extent of his insanity (it’s one thing to come up with that plan and believing it works, but to be able to believe you’re the good guy for following it, I mean, sheesh)—, it’s just flat out bonkers. That’s what makes the guy so terrifying, after all: he might present himself as an anti-hero, as having reasoned things out, but underneath all that, there’s really just swirling madness coupled with incredible power.

From his perspective - the one time he asked to do it - they wouldn’t let him - and we all know how that turned out.

It seems like it’d be weird for Gamora _not_ to mouth off about that, though.

Just to go on record right now…
My theory for Avengers 4: They come up with a method of time travel, maybe with some tech from Hank Pym or maybe from Captain Marvel, but they can either only jump a certain number of times or maybe only to times and places associated with the Infinity Stones. They try the first several times and fail, maybe some of them die in the attempts. Tony Stark is the last survivor and he goes to the final battle in Wakanda and maybe he’s dying, and the only thing he can do is tell Thor to aim for the head. Thor kills Thanos just before the snap and everyone else’s deaths are real but the snap never happens.

I guess my point is, your point only works if Thanos doesn’t know how it went _and_ Gamora doesn’t know how it went — and for the sake of a story, I can reluctantly grant that Thanos built his plan around that result without bothering to check, or I can grant that Gamora never bothered to find out; but I’m not sure I’m interested in a story where _neither_ of them ever thinks to ask, either before the conversation in question or during it, “hey, what happened there after that?”

Good point. Look how disruptive it was in “The Leftovers” to lose just two percent of the world’s population.

Thanos doesn’t care how it went - he gave them the opportunity to succeed, it was up to them to make it work.

Gamora, while she may remember what happened, etc - may or may not know the name/location of her home planet. She didn’t argue for or against it based on the success or lack thereof , just based on how wrong it was to do what THanos was doing.

Remember, it hasn’t been that long between GotG and GotG2 , Gamora ‘just’ escaped. Grant you, I think by now she might have tried to find out - but its not in story that she did .

Keep in mind that she was only a child when she was taken from her world, so she almost certainly doesn’t know anything like coordinates. She could still track it down, based on things like the local name and “where do people like me come from”, but that would take time, especially if the world has sunk into obscurity (which it would, if most of the population died off. And, heck, it’d also take some nonzero amount of time for her to even realize that it’s possible: She’s spent most of her life getting used to being the only one of her kind, and in the time since she’s been free, she’s been keeping pretty busy.

And of course it’s possible that for some sci-fi reason, that planet’t society was organized in such a way that the Thanos snap DID actually improve things. It certainly would be a catastrophe on earth, or any human society we could imagine, but aliens are alien.

Eh, remember that Thanos hasn’t always kept her in sight. He’s given her out as a mercenary to Ronin, and there’s no sign it’s the first time. He also sent her out to find the Soul Stone. Personally, it’s entirely possible she used that as an excuse to find her home planet, realized it’s a complete wasteland, and resolved then and there never to give Thanos the ability to do so on a galactic scale.
