Innocent 'til proven guilty?

The Jill Dando case is the exception which proves the rule about reporting restrictions surrounding English court cases. A ban on the publication of photographs of the defendant is routine. In this particular case, however, the trial judge has decided that the ban can be lifted. This is a very, very rare move. I assume that he feels he can do so because neither side will try to rely on visual identification by witnesses. That this will be so seems hardly surprising given the great difficulty the police had in locating any witnesses who got a clear view of the culprit. Other reporting restrictions remain in place.

Thanks, APB. I had been misled by inaccurate newspaper coverage.
