**IDBB** your parents’ attitude was unconscionable, ethically reprehensible and thoroughly disgusting. While you may be due some serious sympathy, my impulse to do so is seriously tempered by your comments in the [other thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=157699&perpage=50&pagenumber=1) and the title of this one which imples that **cichlidiot** was “fat bashing” which was clearly not the case in her OP. The _point_ of **cichlidiot’s** OP is that it’s _wrong_ to put people’s weight under scrutiny and then offer a myriad of opinions while knowing jack shit about that person’s circumstances. It is _sick_ when Alicia Silverstone’s “shocking weight gain” draws enough attention to eclipse the winners at a 1997 awards show. It is just as sick when the media then turns around in 2003 and says “How shocking! That actress looks emaciated. Yuck!” Those comments are hurtful, if not downright harmful – no matter on which side of the coin you find yourself. _Some_ people are fat or skinny because of bad choices in nutrition. _Some_ people are fat or skinny because of medical conditions. _Some_ people are fat or skinny because they are emotionally stressed out and respond to the stress by eating too much or not eating at all. While it may exasperate you that skinny people dare to bitch about their skinniness, your comments were uncalled for. The thread was dealing specifically with the misfortune of being at one extreme end when the “ideal” is smack in the middle. ---

**andros** –Right is the answer. I had an extremely traumatic homelife growing up,it’s amazing that I’m not dead. I should be. I attempted suicide TWICE. My parents constantly berated me and my two siblings for not being ‘good enough’. We were teased BY MY OWN PARENTS for not having good enough grades,looking good enough (when lord knows they were no prom king and queen theyselves),etc. My stepfather (who we always suspected was bipolar)would go into hysterical rages and destroy the house if it wasn’t clean enough.I even recall one instance when I got into a fight with my mother over some guy I wanted to go out with that sh e didn’t like and she had my stepfather hold me down while she hit me and slapped my face. The ONE time I dared report any of this shit to a school authority, my mother made me tell them I lied and then locked me in my room the entire weekend. I have a had a strange and most disturbing childhood.It’s a wonder I’m not insane or locked up in prison or something.It’s a goddamned MIRACLE I have what I have now.I guess I am just lucky. And for everyone who called me bitter, you try surviving shit like that and end up not bitter. IDBB ---

**Wicked** –I don’t see how it can be.Most of the time I wear dark-colored teeshirts or longsleeved shirts (some dressy,some not) and jeans and tennis shoes. When I do choose to ‘dress up’, I usually wear one of three things:A longsleeved black shirt with iron-gray flowers embroidered on the hem and a long black skirt,a black short-sleeved shirt and a calf-lenght black skirt with crimson flowers embroidered on the hem OR (my favorite)an iron-gray lace floorlength dress (it’s got a black thingie sewn undeneath so it’s not like it’s see-thru)that has short sleeves and a matching lace shawlthingie with little tassles on it. I don’t see how what I’m wearing (unless I decide to add my spiked collar that day)can draw attention to me.I wear normal clothes for goddess’ sake.😕 I have heard (while at a salad bar of all places) somebody who was three places down and to the left of me(on the other side of the glass across from me) whisper “Oh god…look at the freak piling all that stuff on her salad.No wonder she’s so fat.” when all I had added to my pile o’ lettuce was a bit of tunafish and some cheese.😕 IDBB ---

This reminds me somehow of this girl I used to have working for me as an office assistant. She was a pretty good worker, but the whole world was just out to get her- it permeated every aspect of her personality and she had to be let go because of it. She was just angry and miserable all the time. The day she got fired (by my boss), she came into the office full of people in shock. She announced to everyone that she’d been fired and told us all it was because she had a “SHITTY FUCKIN’ ATTITUDE!!!” She was completely shocked by this, and did not at all see the irony in the fact that she was ranting away about her “shitty fuckin’ attitude” while currently exhibiting her shitty fuckin’ attitiude. This just reminds me of it. So bizzare. ---
