With the Washington Nationals clinching a playoff berth I heard this oldy on ESPN this morning.Of course, they aren’t talking about the current team.
“Washington…first in war, first in peace, last in the National League.”

and another good one…
“You can’t spell SUCK without USC.”

I was at the Nats game last night, and after a fight in the stands late in the game which led to someone being ejected, I was reminded of the phrase from my childhood: “Dodger fans leave early.”

The exasperating Brooklyn Dodgers were long known as “Dem Bums.”

The equally (or more) exasperating New Orleans Saints were long called the Aints.

Leo Durocher supposedly made up the term “Nice guys finish last” about Mel Ott’s New York Giants.

At different times, the Cincinnati Bengals have been called the Bungles.
The Boston/Milwaukee Braves had two good pitchers, then a lot of bad ones. Their motto was “Spahn and Sain, then pray for rain.”

Mets fans of the early Sixties often repeated Casey Stengel’s famous line: “Can’t anybody here play this game?”

During the Raiders worst days in Los Angeles, their stadium (The L.A. Colosseum) was known as The Mausoleum.

During the bad eyars, the New England/Boston Patriots, normally called the Pats, have been called the Patsies.

For far too much of my Mets fandom life (including right now) it’s been too easy and too accurate to say METS = “My Entire Team Sucks”.

Seriously, they’ve won four (4) home games since the Saturday before the All-Star Game. FOUR. They’re 4-29 in their home ballpark since winning on Saturday, July 7th (at which time they were 5 games over .500, 1 game behind the WC-leading Braves and less than 4 games out of first place). Despite overall pretty decent pitching (until losing 16-1 last night, being down 8-0 before ever batting), they’ve gone 19 home games in a row scoring 3 or fewer runs (including losing 16-1 last night, and being down 8-0 before ever batting).

Never mind mailing it in, the Mets haven’t even found the packing tape.

Here in the Buffalo area, the Miami Dolphins are known as the Fish and we use the phrase “Squish the Fish” when they play the Bills.

Miami fans apparently refer to the Bills as the Buffalo Chickenwings. (I read this in a Dave Berry column.) I don’t know if they have any rhymes based on that.

The annual Canadian football game in Winnipeg between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is called the “Banjo Bowl”, after a Winnipeg placekicker called Saskatchewan fans “a bunch of banjo-pickin’ inbreds”. He later apologized, clarifying that “the vast majority of the people in Saskatchewan have no idea how to play the banjo”.

I know that is why it is so much fun! BTW did they ever find out if, in fact, Memorial Stadium in Lincoln got astroturf to prevent the cheerleaders from grazing? 😉
