> Question for any Jewish Mumpers and readers ---- I saw something today I can’t figure out or Google-fu. There were several men (30-say 50 years old) with their hair trimmed and dyed to make it look like they were wearing a yamulka \<sic?\> when they weren’t. And they were in a more religious form of attire and not straight street clothes. This strikes me as not being close to (pardon the expression) kosher - some sort of religious contradiction in terms. Can anyone fight my ignorance on just what the heck I was seeing? This was before dinner and I was stone cold sober.

That doesn’t sound like anything with which I am familiar. What makes you think they were Jewish? What did the garb look like?

If they were Hassidim or Lubavitcher, they’d have had peyot (those curly sideburns), and have been wearing black suits with white shirts, and wide brimmed hats. For those sects, yarmulkes are are only visible indoors. This also goes for the rebbi (learned leaders) of the communities, although they’d also have bushy, sometimes unkempt, beards. Orthodox and some Conservative Jews wear yarmulkes indoors and out, and otherwise dress “normally”. Reform Jews and Reconstructionists (sometimes called “Jews for Jesus”) do not have any distinguishing garb outside of synagogue.
