Wow. I had no idea… Stunning.

I never realized how intense the bombing was, and how horrifying it must have been for the residents. I wonder how the city functioned at all during this period.

Check out some of the numbers on the red blobs.

That’s just what the project has mapped so far, further down the river was devastated as well, and many, many other places in the UK. A map like this of Germany would, after the various air commands got going, be an even denser sea of red.

Stoically.

It makes me wonder how many people they had mapping the bomb sites, as opposed to, say, fighting fires or clearing rubble.

It reminds me of one one of my fav British miniseries – Danger: UXB

Here’s a BBC news piece on the official London bomb damage maps from that period. Very interesting. they point out just how miraculously St. Pauls survived almost untouched amidst total devastation.
